What bolt faces for what caliber? What interchanges?

I am wondering if there is a list or chart somewhere that lists the diameter of brass. For example, a bolt face for a 243, will it work with anything else in the short or long action category?

Is it kind of the same principle as shell holders for a reloading press?

Any of that make sense?

I don't know a whole lot about this subject, but I can give some info.

.243 Win (.308 Family) can accept: .260 Rem, 7mm-08, .308, and so on.

.30-06: .25-06, .270, .280 Rem and so on.

I believe 8mm Mauser and .30-06 can be interchanged as long as the action is the correct length (Yugo Mausers have an intermediate action, whereas others are long action.)

.223 can be slightly modified IIRC (with some bolt face grinding) for: 7.62x39, 6mm PPC, 6.5 Grendel

That is all I really know. There are others out there but these seem to be the most basic. Mostly people just do a barrel swap, but others will do more complex modifications.

You should be able to find the measurments that you seek in just about any reloading manual, all of mine have specs for all cartridges listed in the reloading tables.

Just about any cartridge that uses the same shellholder will also share bolt faces.

I was trying to figure out what barrel swaps I could do without having to swap bolt faces. I need a donor action, checking on my possibilities.

Bolt faces are different than action length. Both must be consideredYour bolt may clear 243 and such, but the action may not clear 30-06. Both can be the same bolt face. I shoot allot of 257Roberts, which can fit a Mauser action (7x57, 8x57), and a long action (30-06 and similar), but not (with the right length) a short action (.308, .243, 7-08). Meanwhile, the bolt face is the same (.473 rimless) as the rest.

A true long action will handle all but aselect few cartridges in terms of length.

Heck "short actions" are actually a fairly recent development. It wasn't too long ago that a cartridge like .223 came on the same length action as 300win mag

Not worried about action length, only diameter. My 1968 Winchester 243 model 70 is a long action.

These are all .471 base diameter.
There are also several from .470 to .471 that would work.

Without getting into specialty calibers you basically only have three bolt-face sizes.

.223 size, 30-06 size, and belted magnum size.

Odd-balls like the 7.62x39, older rimmed calibers, and a few of the propriety "cartridge of the month club" calibers lately may not fit anything without bolt modification.
