What are you shooting? Paper/steel or game?

Paper or steel, I like the 175gr Sierra MatchKings. I'm about to start testing the 178gr Hornady BTHP Match.

Game, I'd go with a Nosler Partition or Accubond or something similar.

The one economical/efficient/accurate most user friendly to develop an acceptable long range load for an average never satisfied amateur is the 168 grain Hornady BTHP. It shots well in all my bolt action .308 caliber rifles so is versatile which always is a great plus with any firearms. I have some Sierra Match King bullets in heavier weights I have not tried at long range. I am sure these would make good candidates, however, my pocket book has always kept me running on the skimpy side for more shooting = more enjoyment. For game I never get skimpy though as clean accurate shoots must be ones constant. Bullets that are designed for specific game or hunting situations are incredible in this day and age and should be taken advantage of when at all possible.

A 155 or a 175 is what I go to. Both have a significant windage advantage over the 168 at their nominal velocities.

If you are talking about shooting steel, 600 yards isn't much of a challenge for a .308 with a decent scope and proper dope. 155, 168 and 175-8 will all work well. My go to load for out to 900 yards is the Hornady 178bthp match. Better BC than most other offerings other than the much more expensive Bergers. It's not too difficult to get that bullet up to 2550+ fps, which will stay super sonic out to 1000yards. In my hands, my accuracy falls off around 850 yards, but I have the 6.5C for those ranges.

If you are looking to shoot tight groups on paper @ 600, you may need to look at the Bergers or Lapua offerings.

Me personally then, I'd go with the 175 SMK. I push mine 2686 for a 600yd load, 2760 for my 1000yd load.

I'm interested in seeing how my test come out using the 178's though

My application is slightly different (CMP\NRA highpower out of a 30-06 or .308) across the course to 600 yards. I found the 168 Sierra Ideal for that application as a moderate recoil load for offhand and rapid fire. I have used them all, and have had really good results with this bullet. The 155 would be my second choice right now, but I am looking at using it as primary due to its high BC lower recoil impulse, and it will do 1000 yards if you can start it a 2950 fps at the muzzle, but for an M1A that is really not advisable, you might be able to get it out of your bolt gun. I love the 175, expecially at 8,9,10 hundred yards it shines bright there. I have more limited use with the 178 Hornandy, but it has shown outstanding accuracy especially at long range in my limited testing of this bullet. If you are interested in the Hornandy buy when you see it as I am pretty sure they still only make it once a year.

Honestly horseman61. For 600 yard work, any of these will do fine. Buy a small qty of each and test throughly. Dont discount Nosler otm, or Hornandy's AMAX as both are quality bullets. I do not consider the 168gr sierra a 1000 yd rd. out of a service rifle. That is what the 175 was created to do, and if your looking for just one bullet to go the distance of 100-1000 yards and learn it only, concentrate on brands and mfr of that bullet weight (175). :D hope this helps.

I use 175 SMK's. 178 Hornady A-max will work too. Most 308 bullets will make it out to 600yds, its not that hard for that caliber.
