what do you guys think about the FAL

I have a Belgium-made FAL with no import markings (a long story) and I like it very much. I don't really shoot bullseye with it but I figure it's good for "MoO" (Minute of Osama).

I get fouling under the handguards enough to wipe off every 3-5k rounds. Hell, at that point, I don't really care. ;)

And I hate the rifle. Hate, hate, hate, I say.

They're keeping me hostage in the gun room. Help! I can't escape.

When you find a good one, accuracy isn't a problem. I embarass the hunting rifle guys at 300+ with a scoped G1 build regularly, and I'm shooting cheap surplus ammo.

They're terrible...accessories are so overpriced...like those $8.00 mags from Tapco..:)

And their only good for 2 inches at 100 yds....awful.....

And that silly "gas adjustment system" that reduces recoil to near nothing...

I'm ready to get rid of mine...;)

Well, they're overpriced compared to the $1@ lot of G3 mags they had on clearance. I didn't *need* another 50, but....

Just like I didn't need the CAI special $2.50 FAL mags. No, not me.

I have two and I love them both. One is an ORF Imbel build that I had problems with at first. It nearly soured me on FAL's but I loved the design enough that I stuck with it and worked on it until it ran right. The design is simple enough that a guy with no experience with them (meaning me) was able to fix a couple problems and make it work.
The second is a DSA. Both run great with all ammo I have tried in them including my handloads. Both shoot very well with issue sights (golf ball sized groups or so at 100 yards with surplus ammo). They use cheap mags and have good ergonomics. Recoil is very mild, especially considering how powerful the round they fire is. Mags are cheap. They are heavy but considering what they do I am willing to deal with one tiny little flaw.
One is going to stay like it is and one is is going to get chopped to about 17". I wouldn't mind having another one around just for the hell of it.

I don't have a DSA gun but...

I've got a Rhodesian build on an Imbel receiver from VOW and it eats anything and purrs while poking close holes in paper.

I've got a CIA frankenfal and it eats anything.

I've got a .223 para FAL that is cutting it's teeth on steel case still.

DSA isn't the only place to get a FAL, just the best known outside the FAL community.

Oh and cheap mags, milsurp ammo, tons of accessories, history!

nice collection there!! I hate the fouling under the handguards cause I have Asthma...it smelled up my apartment, some of us don't like cordite smell.... thats a no-go....but we stilll want good guns -- so I switched to AK's. I clean them at the car wash and everything's good ....

I just think its really strange that FALs vent gas under the handguard, I think they are awsome firepower!!! betterthan m-14 in my mind..

The iron sights are absolutely dispicable. Can't see anything in that small STG58 peep hole.

21" barrel models are very long, and the ergonomics in my opinion aren't the best.

Reliable though if you go with a DSA, and cheap mags... Pros and Cons.

I'd go for a PTR91 though.

The FNFAL (STG-58A flavor) is a big heavy pig. The handguards get really hot (especially with the stock metal stocks), with even moderate use. The sights (as noted above) are less than ideal for accuracy, and with milsurp ammo generally run 4-6" at 100 yards.

That being said, I love the FAL. It's built like a tank and can withstand any amount of abuse I can dish out. It's also versatile enough to allow for a fair amount of add on parts and accesories (nothing like an AR-15, but not bad). Recoil is also pretty well soaked up by all that weight. The FAL comes in many versions from highly accurate match grade ($$$) to short carbine folding stock full auto versions.

I opted to go with a DSA STG-58A and have made a few modifications along the way.

This is the SA-58 type 2 (made in america) receiver (cut for carry handle), surplus Steyr full length barrel with DSA muzzle brake, DSA freefloat handguard with Versa-pod bipod, VOW para rear sight, Arms dust cover scope mount and Falcon ergo G3 grips.

I like my FAL just fine and don't plan on parting with it anytime soon.

An honest answer...
I had a Century L1A1 'Klinton Sporter' and I loved it --- but it NEVER functioned reliably. Plus, it was a bitch to scope properly. Pounded a Redfield to death, probably because of the cheap scope mount.
STILL, the gun NEVER worked 100%.
I think the FN-FAL is one of the finest rifles EVER, but my example went to help finance an AR15.com/ArmaLite 2003 Special Edition Black Rifle AR10 in .308...
Hey. Here's a REALLY NICE RIFLE!
It's been 100%, cost of magazines regardless!
EASY to scope or add whatever to the gun.
It kicks A$$.

I'd opt for an AR10.:D

If you want a pistol grip self loading .308 rifle in Cali, then the DSArms Cali FAL is just about the only option. Unlike the neutered FAB-10, the FAL was originally designed to take stripper clips, so DSA put a stripper clip ready upper on the rifle and pinned the magazine.

If I buy a Cali FAL and then later move back to the USA, I can make it a real FAL.

I plan on buying a DSA FAL this year, but I keep hearing that it takes awhile to get them.
