I am shooting a 22lr (CZ 452) out to 100 yrds, but was thinking about shooting .308, taking a precision rifle class. What do you think about the FN SPR. I'm the kind of guy who buys once, doesn't like to trade, replace, or move up (at least not quickly).

Nice gun.

But it's still a Winchester Model 70 claw extractor version. (Their return to the pre-'64 design) With the price of the SPR listing at $1300, perhaps it's cheaper to find a Model 70 Custom Sharpshooter or Model 70 Stealth II variant (the latter as seen at GunsAmerica for around $700). ;)

Then there are the Savage 10FP series, as well as the Remington Varmint or PSS/Police versions. I have a PSS in .308, and it's a consistent 1/2 MOA rifle.

Thanks Gewehr98. I'm gonna do some more homework, starting with your suggestions....thanks :)

I'd look into a Remington 700 to start. It's a great gun out of the box, and if you start upgrading, the sky's the limit.

A lot of guys like the PSS for the palm swell and lack of internal safety. The VS is pretty much the same gun with a slimmer stock and the Remington j-lock.

There should not be J locks on new production Remingtons. And, it still no big deal to replace it with a different shroud. And, 700P or 700VS or 700VSF are all the same action. Just a different finish. Personally I do not like the palm swell of the PSS stock. Close out VS's can be still for 550 to 600 NIB. A factory barrel in 308 should give you decent accuracy to about 4K rounds or so. Hey after all it is mass produced factory barrel! And, working up a load for the 308 is basically a no brainer! Varget, Lapua or Winny Brass, CCI BR2 Primers topped off with 168 or 175 SMK! Done deal!

That aside one has to remember that the FN SPR comes with barrel that will hold less then MOA well towards 10K of rounds down the tube. It comes with 20 MOA scope mount. A multitude of McMillan stocks and barrel lengths can be had!

There is afterall the Tactikewl factor of a FN SPR. Functionally, Savage with McMillan stock is nearly half the price! And, you get a adjustable trigger! Then you can spend the other half of the money on glass! And, still be way a head of the game!

Supposedly the new 700P can be had with an externally adjustable trigger this year. A this option is a long the lines of XR100 or 40XB Tactical with it being user adjustable without taking down the gun!

Afterall what do you want it for? Do you want to punch paper and perhaps a club level shoot? Or are you a slotted member of a LE agency having to supply his/her own weapon!
