Wow, it is always interesting when someone dredges up one of these old threads that run several pages. You start reading and here is a post from someone who doesn't post here anymore because they moved to another board, and there is one from someone who was banned for one reason or another, and that is one from a member who has passed away...Very odd feeling sometimes, almost feels like a reunion.
Anyway, in answer to the question (I'm surprised I never posted on it originally), I have one "always loaded" gun, and a few that alternate:
My always gun is my Taurus 85CH. It is often either in my pocket or in a IWB holster when at home, and is always nearby when I sleep.
One gun that is almost an "always" gun (it is usually, but not always, loaded up) is my Taurus PT140 Milennium Pro. It is occasionally in my pocket, often in an IWB tucked holster and usually spends the night loaded near my bed.
I also always have a larger gun loaded up. Usually it is a revolver (my S&W 65LS or my 6" S&W 586 most often, occasionally my P&R S&W 19, most rarely, but occasionally it is my .41mag S&W 57) but sometimes it is my CZ 75B or Charles Daly 1911. Occasionally, especially when there is something going on in the neighborhood, I'll have both a larger revolver and one of the service pistols loaded up.
In long guns it is usually my Benelli Nova 12ga with 18.5" smoothbore barrel and ghost ring sights. Often I have my Winchester 94 in .45LC loaded as well, but not as often because the .45LC sometimes has feed issues (not often, but just often enough that I don't rely on it for defense very often- I need a .357mag or .44mag lever rifle since .45LC with the small rim has a reputation for this in a rifle). I don't keep it loaded but I do have 100 rounds loaded in clips for my SKS in case of an extreme need (such as multiple home invaders).
If I ever get used to my S&W 442 it may become another "always" gun as it is light enough to always reside in my pocket while in the house (I don't live in a CCW state) but if so, it will be in addition to the Taurus 85 not a replacement.
Anyway, the order I bring them into play is:
-While awake the go to gun is the one on my person (either the Taurus 85CH or Taurus PT140 M. Pro). Depending upon where I am in the house and my needs I will get to the larger handgun or the long gun as fast as possible (preferably I'll have both).
-While asleep the smaller guns are loaded and near, but usually the larger handgun is the go to gun (unless it is the rare occasion I don't have one loaded) if I know there is a situation. If just checking out a "bump in the night" that I don't know what it is I'll take one of the smaller guns to be discrete in case it is nothing. If there is something going on the handgun is just to get to the long gun.
