I see tons of posts about Walmart this and Walmart that. I would like to see some posts about Cabelas...I can't be the only one that has noticed they are no longer a store for the real sportsman. Seems like ever since they introduced their Cabelas credit card the prices are no longer competitive.
I still order some things and visit the retail store in Owattona, MN once in a while but only do so armed with a bunch of Cabelas points built up on my Cabelas card or a 20% discount offer in hand. Has anyone elso noticed this?:(

I've spent a lot of money there lately...... most of my Christmas shopping was done there. But then again, I don't buy much of anything, anywhere that's not on sale............

Prices of everything are going thru the roof. Someone already mentined gas, Look at the price of milk and meat. Price of Oil is high that translates to high transportation costs, plastic, manufacturing etc. Corporations are passing all of that extra cost on to you and me, you notice that their margins are not changing.

Cabelas in St. Louis is pretty good. They have all of my business now since Pro Bass Pi$$ed me off.

I don't make a special trip of it, I agree unless you split the gas four ways its costly. The damb Hazmat charge to ship certain things pays for 1/2 a tank. What I was getting at was we have a Sportmans Warehouse that is closer and thier prices are much better.

Cabelas is too far for me, I only go there if I have to go to San Antonio so on my way back I stop and check it out. But I haven't go there in quite some time. When I have been there always come out with at least lots of ammo and the last time was ammo and a new revolver. :D

I'll stay with them.

In December, I saw on the LaserCast Bullets web site that they raised their price to over $90 a thousand on bullets in my desired size.

Cabelas still listed their supply of LaserCast at $51 per thousand.

Obviously, Cabelas hadn't seen the price increase yet.

I quickly placed an order with Cabelas for 6000 LaserCast bullets at $51 per thousand. They ran out of stock and I was put on backorder until they could order more.

Several Cabelas emails later, each pushing the expected in stock date out, I became suspicious that they were hoping that I would get tired of the delay and cancel the order.

I didn't, and I left the order stand. Over a month later, they shipped me those bullets at $51 per thousand.

It wouldn't surprise me if they paid more for that lot than they charged me.

People keep posting about Walmart because almost every one of us has a Walmart within easy driving distance.

There wasn't even a Cabelas in my state until this year, and it's still an hour and a half driving distance from me.

Cabela's may not have the greatest day to day prices, but they have the absolute best customer service, bar-none.

Except for a single rifle case I bought there, everything else I have seen and/or purchased has been grossly overpriced. The 4 times I have been in their stores (twice in Kearney, NE; twice in La Vista, NE) I have been treated very rudely by salespeople that were clueless about what they were selling.

Cabelas sucks. I'll stick with my LGS, Scheel's, or the Internet.

The nearest Sportsmans Warehouse to me is closing, probably partly due to the Cabelas that open a few miles down the freeway.

I won't comment on Cabelas customer service since half my time in their store is spent trying to find someone to answer my question or help me find something. They're okay once you corner someone, sometimes, othertimes they are not.

As to their prices? I'm not sure. I'd have to pick a few specific items and then do some price comparisons around the area. Gas would suck up any savings I might find so I'll hold off on this study until I'm already making a loop and several shops are on the way.

As to Wal-Marts? There is one regular sized one within a few miles of home, and several Super-Wal-Marts within a half hour or so drive. They're the 7-11 of department stores, almost one on every corner.

If I buy any ammo this week maybe I'll do a lap and make a price check.

From my experience. Cabela's has cheaper fishing gear, Sportsman's Warehouse has cheaper gun gear.

There's no Cabelas in California. A Bass Pro Shops opened about 12 miles from me (Ontario) last year. It's a huge store with lots of wonderful displays, boats, guns and various merchandise. The prices are just too high and most of the Employees already seem disinterested in their jobs. I thought it was just a California thing.

There are three Walmarts within 8 miles of my home though they don't carry much for hunting and shooting.

I do most of my shopping on the internet. No California 8.25% sales tax, shipping is free if you choose the right place and/or quantity, wait for a sale or clearance and it's all good!

Cabela's is still cheaper than most things than Midway even with a FFL discount.

Cabelas recently opened a store in Connecticut about fifty minutes away. Even so I have no desire to drive there because their prices are outrages. Adding the price of gas, time and expensive shopping I probably never step foot in the store. In addition they have a store policy there to not sell guns or ammo to Mass residents. Bass Pro is opening a store in Foxborough MA, near Boston. I have no inclination to drive there either.

Cabelas is fine as long as you know what your looking for and what the price is online, inlcuding shipping, or at other local stores. If you impulse buy, Cabela's will break you. Be an informed shopper, and Cabelas has it's niche.

This is very true. I've purchased items from a Cabela's retail store for well below the cheapest cost online, even before shipping.

Spiro, where in GA is that? The store in Calhoun was never built. Construction never started? I hope I'm wrong.

I have done a lot of mail oder with Cabela's and found them to be very good but now that they have opened a store in East Hartford which is 15 minutes from my home things have changed. If I buy mail order the money I would have saved is sucked up with the sales tax I now have to pay. I recently bought a new Glock 23 from a local dealer (his inventory is extensive) for $50 less than Cabela's price. Bye the bye, Cabela's had a used Glock 19 for sale for the same money that I paid for the new 23.
I thought the prices would be better and I am disappointed in what I see.

22-rimfire, I thought there was one opening in GA Northwest of Atlanta soon! Publix here in Gwinnett is selling gift cards to Cabelas on their gift card rack. You're saying the store was canceled?

when i lived in phoenix i only went to sportsmans wharehouse because my wife worked there and i got a discount on ammo. same when i moved back to washington she worked there and i got a discount. also its on my way to and from work 6 days a week. the only cabela's i another 30minutes farther then my work form my house. i don't see the point to drive tha much farther for the same stuff. even though i want to check it out i herd they are really cool inside.

Spiro: I have not been past the orginal planned construction site in some time. But the high rollers in Dalton had informed me that the developer got greedy and Cabelas lost interest over a year ago. It was listed on the Cabelas web site for a long time, but no more. The current store listings on the Cabelas web site show no stores in GA either built or under construction. I was really looking forward to that store being open too just like Bass Pro. Here is a link to an article. http://www.daily-tribune.com/NF/omf/daily_tribune/news_story.html?rkey=0045168+cr=

The new Cabelas in CT is ok, 25mins from me. They have most everything for reloading and hunting. Prices are ok for what I use, but it's closer to go to Center Sports (local guy) to get primers and powder. Their gun section is so so not much good used guns unless you use their library. Prices are no better than Hoffman's or Newington Gun Exchange and they wanted to hose me on a trade. I decided I would not trade or purchase a firearm from them after that little encounter. I'll make the trip to pick up something I need for reloading or a case, but I tend to support the local guys more. I have been more impressed with Cabelas clothing over their firearms.

All those stuffed animal displays cost money, you know.

It's a retail store. Shopping at a store has advantages and disadvantages over the internet. Overhead and taxes are higher, but they have it right now and you can handle it before you buy. You'd think everyone would understand that internet shopping and a retail store are different.
