what if you had to buy them over

The only inherited gun is the .22 Savage.
Therefore a .22 rifle, then SKS, Lee-Enfield (#4 & #5), Garand. No changes.

You brought up a very unique, original question. Interesting.

I think I'd do it all on the cheap and get more for my money, with the exception of a quality hunting rifle. I'd get a couple AK's for what I have in my AR, a few CZ82's to replace my 75B and my P11, I'd likely get another Buckmark, but I'd get a few 91/30's instead of a bolt action 22.lr, a cheaper 10/22, and a couple 870 Express's instead of a Wingmaster. See if I couldn't double the number of guns I had previously.

I'd probably buy pretty much what I have now - An M1 Garand, M1 Carbine, AR15, .22lr semi auto rifle, Buckmark, 45ACP 1911, a quality 9mm to carry (I have more than I shoot now, so one or two should fill that niche) and an inexpensive shotgun. I'd skip the multiple 9mm handguns, the 40S&W pistol (never warmed to that cartridge) and the POS SKS.

I'd basically take the insurance money and buy the guns I have now. I don;t keep guns I don't like or shoot. So what I have now is what I like and what gets shot. Only ones I wouldn't replace are the ones I couldn't replace, like Grandpa's .32 special or my dad's 97 shottie.

With the insurance money from losing every last one of my firearms, if I had to start over, I'd immediately start with these:

Handguns:

1. Beretta 92FS (Italian-made)
2. Ruger LCP
3. S&W 442
4. Ruger SP101 (2-1/4")
5. Blued Colt 1991 series 1911 Government in .45ACP
6. Ruger MKIII Target 5.5" Stainless
7. Beretta 85FS Cheetah Nickel
8. Beretta 96A1
9. Ruger Super Blackhawk 10.5" Stainless cut to 5.5"

Rifles:

1. Colt 6920 AR-15 (completely "tacticooled") + scoped 24" varmint upper
2. Marlin 1894 Stainless .44 Magnum
3. Ruger 10/22 Stainless
4. Marlin 1895 Guide Gun Stainless with full-length mag tube
5. Remington Model 700 .30-06

Shotguns:

1. Remington 870 Marine w/ multiple barrels
2. Browning Silver Hunter 12 gauge 3" chamber, 28" barrel

What I have now is:

- Glock 21 .45acp *
- S&W Model 10 .38spl
- Marlin 60 .22lr *
- Remington 870 12 gauge *
- Remington 700 SPS Tactical .308 *
- Springfield Armory M1A .308
- RRA LAR-6 6.8spc *
- Arsenal SLR-95 7.62X39

* = Re-buy

The toughest decision would be losing the SLR-95, but the 6.8spc can do more.

My older brother's home burnt down three years ago. He lost everything that they either weren't already wearing or was essentially in their hands. He was shocked how quickly the fire got out of hand..... a few minutes. There was no... I'll make trips back and forth outside and get the important stuff.

One of his favorite rifles was a Remington Model 700 ADL in 270 win. He has taken just about every deer during his lifetime with that rifle. His was destroyed in the fire along with an assortment of other guns. I recall him talking about the Model 700 as deer season approached the following year. A neighbor gave him a brand new rifle after the fire, but it was not a Remington M700. So, about a week ago I ran onto an as-new M700 ADL in 270 win with a reasonable scope of about the same vintage as his old one for $300. Quite a bargain from my point of view..... emailed my brother and asked if he was interested and I would buy it and later transfer it over to him when I visit next. He declined. I really couldn't believe it, but he said the neighbor would have hurt feelings if he decided not to use the gifted rifle to hunt with.

My brother has only replaced three firearms; a "deer rifle", a 22 rifle, and a shotgun for bird hunting.

A number of my guns were gifts or left to me and are not the kind you can just replace, but I would try. Most of the others were bought because they fit a need or I found a deal on them. Along those lines I would start out with a Remmy or Mossberg 12ga for home defense, along with a Berreta 92 9mm, also a small frame 38spc or slim .380 for CC, a good used 336 30-30 and a bolt 30-06 or .270 etc (used with decent glass) for hunting, a Marlin 39A mountie and either a mkII/III or Buckmark .22 for target, plinking etc. After that it would be just as I took a notion.

There are two I would miss the most. The first is a 22 cal pellet gun. My dad made a deal with me as I was going into my freshman year in high school. If I took Latin for a year and got A's both semesters, he would buy me my very own pellet gun. I did it and got the A's. I reminded him about the deal and the very next Sat he took me and bought me a very nice pellet gun. I was very impressed with how he stuck to the agreement. Made a big impression on me about the value of a man's word.

The other is a lever action rifle. It can easily be replaced (unlike the pellet gun). Mostly becuase I really like it.

I would have skip the HK and the SIG, buy the Glock 19 initially, follow it up replacing the Glock 20, then buy a Buckmark and a 4" Ruger Redhawk .44 Mag.

My current M1A is one of the only possessions I'd run in to a burning building to save, and it sure as Zeus is coming out of one with me. But I'd replace the SKS, AK, and M700 purchasing a little brother for it--an M1A Squad.

I don't care much for shotguns but have grown fond of my 870. I'd pass on the Wingmaster however and get a Police. I see them in some local FFLs with Rem factory extended mag tubes and Knoxx stocks for around $450 to $500. I think one of them would do nicely.

I think I could do just about everything I need to do right now with a pair of M1As as my only rifles, a couple Glocks for bedstand and carry, a .44 for the bigger stuff and a .22 for the biggest stuff ( http://www.thehighroad.org/showthread.php?t=549759 ), and a 12 gauge for the light work.

I'd have a heck of a time replacing two rifles I own. One is hard to find, another damn near impossible.

Other than that I would simply rebuild, I like my current toys. When I build myself a house I'm going to add a fire resistant gun room in the basement. Even with insurance as my collection grows and I add more rare guns, they get harder to replace.

If I had it all to do over again I'd reduce the number of calibers. No reason I need 5 different handgun calibers ... one for autos and one for revolvers would probably do me just fine.

If I lost everything in a fire I'd be really, really sad. I received several guns from my late dad and they were his prized possessions. They aren't replacable. The rest can easily be replaced but I wouldn't replace all of them as I've learned a few lessons along the way.

My favorite saying is, "Only accurate rifles are interesting rifles". I have absolutely no use for an inaccurate rifle.

I had something similar happen with the pocketknife my dad gave me when I was 7. At some point, I couldn't stand the though of loosing it. I stopped carrying it and bought a simple swissarmy knife to replace it. I didn't want it to be a gift knife from someone. I 'm glad I did. Sep 11 happened and in the early days I lost several knives as I kept forgetting to leave it at home and would only remember at the airport.

If I had to rebuild my gun collection from scratch....

I would forget about revolvers altogether.
I know this will ruffle the feathers of the wheel-gun fans, but I just don't enjoy shooting revolvers these days.
I recently sold my Taurus 905 and I will soon be trading my S&W 637 for another semi, and I have gotten rid of my other revolvers long ago.

I also wouldn't bother replacing my two shotguns.
I never shoot them anyway.
I don't hunt, I can't carry them concealed, and they're not even that great for home defense IMO.

I wouldn't replace my rifles either, mostly for the same reasons that I wouldn't replace the shotguns.

Instead I would spend my money...
(1) replacing my Glock 23,
(2) replace my wife's Glock 27,
(3) get a conversion barrel for my Glock 23 (in .357Sig),
(4) buying plenty of ammo and magazines for both Glocks,
(5) maybe buy a S&W M&P compact .40 to see how it fares against my Glock 23.
