i wouldnt use the henry lol. its a fun gun but nooooooo for defense. one of the handguns would be best or get a shotgun later

Which ever gun points the most naturally for you. In a break in situation, you might not have a good light source to see your sights by. With only me and the wife in the house, I can know where everyone is supposed to be, and I can be assured that the 6 ft tall moving dark spot in the living room isn't either of the people who should be there, so I can shoot. I have one gun that if you are in 7-10 ft of me, I will hit without the sights (COM, not pinpoint accuracy). That is the gun I have closest since I don't have a night stand.

Personally for home defense I keep both a handgun and long gun to use as the situation dictates.

Use the handgun you are most accurate with while remaining good follow up shots. Load this with a quality hollowpoint, I prefer a company's Law Enforcement line such as HST or Ranger-T. Also look into nightsights and a light source. I keep a mini flash light and don't like a light on my handgun but again your situation may differ. They also makes laser sights for handguns that offer advantages.

For a long gun your AR would be fine but load it with 55 grain hollowpoint such as from Hornady. If you don't have specific training with this weapon than you may want to pick up a cheap 12-gauge with 5-7 shot capacity and 18 inch barrel. Load it with quality buchshot, number is a matter of preference but I like OO buck and then get some familiarity with the gun. 12 gauge shotguns have been defending American homes since their inception. A famous instructor (forgive me for forgetting his name) said a 12 gauge within thirty yards removes meat and bone. That's what I want.

Be safe and train with whatever you choose. Everybody's situation has to many variables to fit for someone else so learn about weapons and train, learn about other measures of home security (locks, lights, dog?) and learn about tactics (which gun when, use of strategic lighting, clearing your house, use of family and their locations at night, etc). Then take this and adapt it to your situation.

Since you mentioned your AK is semi but not your AR15 i will assume your AR15 is Full auto or burst. That would be my pick!

In reality pick the one you shoot/handle the best. If thats a single shot 30inch barrel .22 chose that. You shoot the level action the best use it. There are some advantages to a level action pistols dont have.

My dad kept a colt 1911 .45 on the nightstand when him and my mom were first married stopped when they had us kids for some reason. The 1911 would be my choice simple, effective, and reliable.

I would suspect that the answer is somewhat influenced by the home environment. For example:

1) Do you have children in the house? If so - how do you plan to secure the HD weapon?
2) What is the construction of the house, and what is its layout?
3) Do you intend on taking a barricade defensive approach to HD using a safe room, or will you be required to leave a specific safe room and venture about the house to secure disjointed areas?

Whichever one you have the most trigger time with and shoot the best.

The gun in my nightstand is my S&W K38 Target Masterpiece, I know it hits the target every time. I put a lot of ammo downrange with that gun and know every little nuance in its trigger pull, enough that I can stack the trigger in double action and hold it just ready to fire, or make it skip a round in the cylinder. It's like and extension of my arm.

I would prefer a revolver. I don't have to think what the manual of arms is if I wake up in the middle of the night. Each of the handguns you listed have a different manual of arms with, IMO, the XDM the most simple.

AK? AR? How big is your nightstand!

I keep a Taurus 66 7 shot 6" .357 mag in my nightstand, with a speedloader next to it.

Why not?

If it's chambered in .357/.38, .45C, or .44 Mag, it would be my choice for the bumps in the night. Especially if he's most experienced with it.

My nightstand gun has to have:
A rail for my light or another way to mount a light
Highish capacity (not a revolver)
big, slow bullets so I have a lower chance of overpenetration

So it was my XD45 when I had it, and now its my EAA Witness 45 polymer compact (GOD I LOVE THIS GUN!)

Usually though, I just have my 12ga mossberg and a maglight. Handguns are available, but not my first pick.

Curious .. how do you make it skip a round ? A serious question as mine did that one day when I was out shooting and I was wonder exactly what I did to make it do that?

When you learn to stack an S&W you can then learn to lower the hammer by a slow release of the trigger and it effectively skips a round.
Thanks, I appreciate your quick response. Thumb on or off the hammer as you slowly release the trigger and lower the hammer ... or are you saying a slow release of the trigger but allowing a normal hammer fall so that the weapon fires anyway?
