I need some help. WISCONSIN

About 19 years ago, I bought a brand new in the box, Smith & Wesson Model 657, .41 Mag, 2" barrel and a round butt. I was told that there were only 5,000 made.

Problem is, I can't find any listings of the gun. I would like to find out what it is worth!

Can anyone give me some ideas?

Thanks for your assistance.

I tried to post a pic but it wouldn't upload. If you need to see a picture, e-mail me and I can send it to you.

This belongs in Revolvers or Firearms Research. Hopefully one of the Moderators will move it for you. Good luck with your pistol!

I don't ever remember seeing a 2" 657. SCSW doesn't list it as a variation.

But, there was a run of about 150-200 with a 3" barrel and a round butt. Those were made in 1998, so it was later than you say yours was made.

If it is in fact a 2", and there are no listings for it, it may be worth the 30 dollars and get a letter from Roy Jinks at the S&W factory about the gun.

If it is still NIB or atleast LNIB I would give $100 plus actual shipping cost, Let me know if we have a deal.

Barrel length is measured from cylinder face to muzzle. Is that how you measured yours?

The gun possom813 posted is a 6" gun. Rare barrel lengths can sometimes bring a premium.

In 1999, the S&W Performance Center produced the M-657 2 5/8" Defensive Revolver (S&W #170134). There would be a Performance Center marking.

In 1986, S&W sold a 3" 657 with round butt, red ramp/white outline.

So, either your age is off, your ruler is short, or someone cut down the barrel of your gun.

You've a very nice Smith and if I was going to opt to carry a revolver it would be this model. Over the years I have owned a nmber of these 3"/657's.

And to this day I keep kicking myself for selling'em....

Unfired, with box a papers -NICE-..you have good collateral!

This is a great back-packing gun...full house 41mag loads are not as annoying as full house 44 mag loads -in this barrel lenght- but are just as deadly!

I truly envy you your 657. What a superb revolver, and in the treasury length at that. Are you in the hunt for perhaps a Browning Citori Featherweight 12ga? If so, drop me a line and I'd be happy to work out the details......

I have seen a few of these trade over the last few months. I was shopping for one, but settled on the .44mag version, the 629 from 1985, same 3" barrel and grips. Excellent grips, the best S&W RB grips out there in my opinion. I have subsequently re-gripped my snubbie K-frames with factory finger groove combats since I learned I could control the .44mag in big 300gr loadings well from this 3" rocket.

these are widely called "Lew Horton Specials" for the distributor who ordered the production run. Available in various large bore calibers and blue and SS. They trade from $550 to $650 in nice condition w/o box or papers, usually $700 to 800 with box and papers. Don't confuse the "permanent" ads on gun broker, etc. from Fugate, et al., with $1100 asking prices as indicative of true value; they are designed to dupe the unwary and in a hurry impulse buyer, generally with alcohol involved, I suspect.

Nice guns - maybe great guns. I love mine. Collectors seem to dig the .41 version for the oddball caliber (and a good one, not knocking it, just not as mainstream as others).

I am a buyer for NIB 657 3 inch guns at a thousand dollars a pop. Send me all you can find.
