Sorry if this is in the wrong place, but didn't know where else to ask.
I have had this cane sitting over by the bookcase for ever.. and I have no idea what it is or where it came from. I "think" wife had gotten from her dad in West Virginia.

Cane is 30 1/2 in long, wood, the top near the handle is wrapped in leather, the handle is Antler. There is a silver band at the bottom of the handle and the lower end of the leather wrapping . There is stamped or etched letters in the dirty silver/metal, as near as I can tell with my magnifying glass it says

FRANZ HIE5 (OR S) SOHNSWIEN
There is one very small mark looks like a box with rounded corners with a K inside it.

The poor pictures I could make are here. http://s266.photobucket.com/albums/ii261/TexasBen/Cane/

Non-Firearm Weapons is the right forum. :) We frequently discuss canes here.

Cant tell you much about the origin, but as a cane affecionado and amatuer cane maker that is a beautiful piece.

That's Franz Hiess & Sohne (Franz Hiess and "Son") from Wien (Vienna) Austria (or what would become Austria). Late 19th century

They exhibited at the Worlds Columbian Exhibition.

Quite the collector's piece and would be a treasure on the Antique Roadshow. You should contact them and they'd probably put you and the cane on the show.

Until then, treat it as a real family heirloom and don't try to do anything to "improve" it.
