with all due respect... I beg to differ. The .348 is a very tapered case...kinda like a 3030 on steroids. It is NOT a straight wall like the photo seems to indicate. This looks like maybe a cartridge that was formed out of a .348 case maybe??

Well, you are correct in figuring that someone made another case out of .348 Win. brass; redrawing, it is called.

The bullet diameter dictates about 44 caliber or "about" 11mm. It could be 10.95mm or one of those really odd ducks. Suggest you look in "Cartridges of the World."

Sorry, I feel like a jerk... Looked at the dimensions again after hunterwinco posted and...yes..it is NOT a standard 348 for sure. Good call!

Closest I can find in a websearch is the 450 Alaskan wildcat. http://www.gmdr.com/lever/450alaskantext.htm Don't know how you could verify it for certain.

Again, sorry for my initial flippant remarks. You have a wildcat of some sort...and an interesting one at that!

http://www.z-hat.com/The Fifty.htm Maybe a 50 Alaskan?? Looks close with no case taper or shoulder.

Edit: The 450 Alaskan seems to have a bit of a shoulder on it. Your cartridge doesn't have any shoulder at all. May be more of a wildcat than listed in the books?
http://www.midwayusa.com/rewriteaproduct/581922 Looks like it? Yes, I think...

The .348 is a bottleneck cartridge.
The cartridge pictured, given the headstamp, is a wildcat based on the .348 Winchester case.

My guess is the 450 Alaskan as the Win 71 was only chambered in 348 and many of these guns were converted to the 450

Edited to say My answer was wrong. Didn't notice diameter of bullet.

But he said the bullet was .446". I guessing he meant diameter. Doesn't say if he measured at the driving band which is visible above the case mouth.

Yes, 0.446" diam. at the driving band.

But he said the bullet was .446". I guessing he meant diameter. Doesn't say if he measured at the driving band which is visible above the case mouth.

I took one apart and found a fiber plug under the bullet. It appears to have stick type, very black color powder.

Thanks,
Scott

With the fiber plug I'm thinking 450 BP Express. I can't find a drawing of one online, but the overall length (3 1/4") sounds right and it's a straight wall case. It's an old double rifle cartridge.
