For the purpose of the discussion, let's say "new" is the last decade or so.

I'll say .17 HMR.

I like the idea of LeveRevolution ammo: cartridges with spitzer-analog polysomethingorother caps on the bullets, designed to be safely fired from lever-action rifles with tube magazines. I haven't shot any yet, though.

Am I disqualified because I'll be buying it in .35Rem? ;)

6.8 SPC. My vote doesn't count though, because I don't own one. It just sounds like the perfect do-all rifle round. Light game, target, and tactical applications in a round that packs more punch than the 5.56.

none of them

they all seem to be niche cartridges, and not for any niches i need. but if i must choose one, i choose the 10mm pistol round.

Agreed. The 10mm was the last good thing. Everything after that is completely stupid.

Who needs short magnums when 90% of game is taken within 100y?

Who needs a .17 rimfire? It can't kill any better than a .22 LR.

Who needs an ultra magnum? Plenty of game fell to the wimpy 300 Win Mag and 375 H&H Mag.

I don't think I have any guns chambered in anything less than 50 years old.
.22LR- 1887- 121yrs old
.380 Auto- 1908- 100yrs old
9mm Luger-1902- 106yrs old
30.06- 1906- 102yrs old
7.62X54R- 1891- 117yrs old
7.62X39- 1943- 65yrs old...what a youngin.

17 Mach 2.
Faster, flatter, more accurate and cheaper than 22LR ammo. 1/3 the cost of HMR and only 300 FPS slower.

30-40 Krag. Well, it's new to ME.

Okay, I vote the leverevolution rounds. That ranks right up there with Post-It Notes, in my opinion. (Wish I had thought of it...)

.338 Lapua Magnum was developed in 1989, so it's not "new" by the OP's definition, but it's new enough in my book. :)

Also, .17 Mach 2 is a very intriguing cartridge. I'm thinking about picking something up in that.

5.7x28 is my favorite new cartridge. Fast, damaging, lightweight, low recoil. It's a nice round for many purposes.

Same boat here.Unless .25acp or .22mag is newer than I think, and beats out 7.62X39, that looks like my newest too. We need an oldest favorite cartridge thread now for thos of us left out in the cold on this one.:D

6.5 grendel

Really, really opens up all kinds of opportunities for the AR platform.

It's cheaper?

I have been toying with the idea of swapping my 10/22 to it.

5.45x39 is newest, and I approve of it, but I really think 7.62x51 is also a credible and more impressive newcomer.

Hands down, I like the .204Ruger. It's super flat shooting and bucks the wind as well as heavier bullets. It has a super light recoil so I can watch the dust spray and adjust for shot #2 - IF I miss w/#1.

I see a lot of people like the new, tiny .17 caliber plinkers like the HMR & Mach 2.
Maybe that'll be my next rifle for short range plinking. Does anyone own and use a .17 anything pistol??
How do you like it? Scoped or open sights?

Big ups go to....

the .357sig :D
the 6.8 SPC round :D

Why more LE agencies/CC license holders/etc do not use the .357sig is beyond me. It's been around for about 10 years but is still not very well known or used. I think because it's specs are so close to the .40S&W and .357magnum.

The 6.8mm SPC rifle load looks to me like a good mid-range caliber for most patrol rifle/PMC/protection uses. The 7.62NATO load is very good but has a lot of power/recoil. The 5.56mmNATO round is ok but does not pack as much punch for most rifle/AR uses in the real world. M-4s are shown to be better than 9mmNATO SMGs but not better than 6.8 SPC or 7.62mm rifles, ;).

Obviously, you have never hunted the plains states or Arizona, New Mexico or Texas where the only shot you get might be accross an arroyo or canyon of 300 or 400 yards.
Believe it or not, out here 100 yard shots have NOT been so common for me, anyway. Maybe they are in Pa, NC, SC, Oh, etc. but not so much west of the Mississippi.

Oh, by the way, as I usually like the oddball stuff any way, I really like the .243WSSM. Shoots great, little recoil great power in a super light, easy to carry all day package.
Just my 2cents, YMMV.
