well im 28 and i purchased my first handgun about 5 months ago. a beretta px4 storm 9mm about a month later i got a ruger mark III 22 pistol for my wife. i also got my ccw here in alabama about a month ago and have been carrying in a iwb from highnoon holsters. well im trying to decide what to get next i have my eye on a few things but i cant make up my mind as to what the best move is or what makes the most sense. id really like a pistol in 45acp and have looking at the xd 45 compact. have also been thinking about a shotgun and the remington 870 marine magnum has caught my eye althought a shiny barrel has bothered me a little i just found out there is a newer one coming out with a black barrel called the marine magnum 870 xcs. And then there is the rifles AR's galore and other oddities like the ps90 and fs2000.

i figure since ive already got one pistol that i should diversify by getting a long gun. but which to get. my paranoia says the AR since the possibity of a new ban is looming in the future at some unknown point.

Cost is an issue as well. 600-700 isnt to big a deal for christmas, but ar's, and ps90's cant really be had at those prices, so it would be back to saving if i wanted to spend more. so what do you all think?

Geist, welcome to THR. An AR would be an excellent choice. I just bought a stripped Stag lower for a hundred bucks. I have been debating about which configuration to build and have really been checking out Delton's kits. I think I can put together a basic 20'' A2 variant for around 650.00 total. This includes a 45.00 upgrade for a chrome lined barrel. Still, a flat top M4-gery is awfully tempting as well.

There is the advantage of an AR. You don't have to buy the whole rifle all at once.

I bought a stripped DPMS lower from Del-Ton 2 months ago ($110). Got a lower parts kit and adj. stock last month (about another $100). Just bought the upper from Del-Ton last week (16" Mid-Length Flat Top Upper with YHM Flip Up Gas Block $425 ).

I'd go project gun & build up an AR to suit your needs...get yourself the lower 1st and built up from there..;)

A long gun might not be a bad idea, just to have it. I'm sure it'll be both educational and applicable should you ever truly need it ... on the other hand , personally I'd buy a .45 anyway. Simply because I find that nothing provides me as much gun-related joy as a good .45.
And when it comes to long guns.. I'm a .308 FAL kind of guy.

For $600-700 you could get about 4 milsurps and some ammo. I'm thinking a Moisan Nagant 91/30 or M38, a .303 Enfield, a K31 Swiss, a K98 Mauser, an SKS or some Warsaw Pact pistolas... CZ 52, PA 63, Makarov. Milsurps are the best and cheapest way to build a "cache". :) Plenty of time for high end stuff later.

go old-school

get a nice revolver, that is if you plan on starting a collection :)

my first gun was Beretta 90-TWO F .40S&W.
then H&K P2000 .40 S&W (my daily CCW, absolutely *GREAT* gun).
next, i'm getting Ruger SP101 .357 Mag for Xmass, can't wait:what:

then...

Mosberg 500 12ga pump action,
AR-15,
AK-47

and eventually .45 ACP.

I'm also new to guns, and am planning on creating a great collection over time, so I want to get one of *each* if you know what i mean, and then build on that.

good luck!
we all feel your pain... soooo many guns, so little money

as far as the pistols go id really like to minimize the types of ammo i have to buy so i was thinking of just sticking to 9mm and 45acp. although i doubt that itll be possible to do that considering how this hobby goes.

ive never heard the term milsurps where do you get those?

Milsurps ---> military surplus. Everything from WW1 or WW2 bolt actions to SKS and AK-47 autoloaders. Most gun shops will have a few on hand, but you can also find them on the web as well as at discount houses such as Big 5, etc.

If you are shooting for accuracy, go for a bolt action (especially mauser), the Swiss K31 being a good choice in the $100 - $200 range. If you just want plinking style fun, go for an autoloader such as the Russian SKS.

Browse this soon to be closed down site for some ideas.

If your worried about getting something before the ban get an AK clone. I purchased a Wasr-10 high cap(romanian stamped clone) with folding stock, slant muzzle break, 1,000 rounds of wolf FMJ 4, 30 round steel magazines for under $500.

I'd buy a .45 anyway. Simply because I find that nothing provides me as much gun-related joy as a good .45.

My thoughts exactly. I love the caliber and recommend that you buy a 1911. Everyone needs one and there is nothing more fun than shooting a 1911. It feels like you are fulfilling the purpose for which you were created.

A number of good 1911's can be had for 700 and under. I recommend a Kimber Custom II. Ignore the naysayers, Kimber is putting out a good firearm right now. You could also pick up a Colt 1991 or a Springfield Loaded.

OR you could buy a Rock Island 1911 for about 350 and an AK 47 with the remaining money. This would be my pick.

at this point i think im gonna go with the ar. im thinking about getting one of these uppers and maybe in a month buying a lower for it. i really wanted an sbr but its a bit more costly plus i suppose itll take a while to figure out how to do all the paperwork and stuff.

http://ar15.com/forums/topic.html?b=7&f=22&t=386304

although im not sure what woudl be better. the DD9.0 rail or the DD12.0?

beyond completing an ar15 i dont knwo when ill be able to purchase another firearm as convincing my wife is tough. she shoots too but shes not as into as me. so it could be 4-6 months before i make another purchase.

Really its personal preferance. The 9 is a little lighter since its shorter. The 12 gives you more room for hanging extra "stuff" off the front.
