If there is any point to barrel break-in, it is to smooth out the surface of the bore while not allowing much copper build-up. This is why the method is usually similar to "shoot 1 / clean for 5, shoot 2 / clean for 10, etc". If there are rough spots in the bore, you make sure to get the copper fouling out/off before you continue.
The best copper remover I have found to date is KG-12, which contains no ammonia and seems to get everything out in about 5x fewer strokes than anything else I've tried.
