What To Use For Scope Shims?

Hello All,

I was wondering what others here would use for shim material for a set of scope rings. I have no idea, so i thought I would ask the experts. Any responses are greatly appreciated

Inside the rings against the scope tube?
Black electrical tape. Or just a coating of rosin.
Under the base to correct elevation?
Beer can.

Think you have an answer already now but yeah . elec tape for ''grip'' ..... and beer can is good . it's about 5 thou thick. You can super glue pre formed layers of that together to build up to a thicker piece so they don't slide around while tightening up. Applying these with use of a borescope is a fairly quick way to ''get on the paper'' quicker when needed.

I use Burris Signature rings and their inserts.

Well, Carson, there are some formulas for bullet lube that call for tallow. So trim your steak close and render the fat down.

I prefer to use the plastic from the scope ring/scope mount packaging. I'm a bit paranoid of mixing metals.

I've used cut up plastic shotgun shells. Black ones (prefer smooth to ribbed) for blue guns, silver Win-AA handicap for "silver" guns, bases. Cut to size and drill holes with hand drill/bit. Don't mar finish and minimal distortion from high pressure.

Make sure the beer can is empty before using it as a shim, Pabst is bad for the bluing.

I second the vote for Burris Signature rings. They have plastic inserts that can be offset a certain amount. I'm also wondering what you need the shims for. If you are using the shims for windage, I'd suggest you get a windage adjustable Redfield style mount. If you are using them for more elevation adjustment, I'd suggest you use the Burris rings.

I always used sheet brass; you can buy it in different thicknesses. You can shim between the scope and the rings or between the mount base and the receiver. Or you can use emery cloth to trim the back/front of the mount, which will raise the front/back. The latter way is totally invisible.
