I saw an sks today in a pawn shop and on top of the receiver behind the bolt there was a star with the numeral 1 in the middle. The guy in the store didn't know what type it was but he insisted that the ones made by norinco were the best and he had 2 or 3. The one with the star was in decent shape but used. He wanted $419.00 for it and I think $650.00 for the norinco's. The norinco's looked new but I could be wrong. I didn't stay long and was just taking a quick look and needed to be on my way. I bet some of you guys can clue me in.

Every time I go to a gun show I always ask "how much for the sk" hurts my feelings .They used to trade around here for $100 to $150. Wish I hada buried some. Still got 3, 1 rifle, 1 paratrooper, and 1 sporter. I'l carryem to u for $650.

I recently purchased a pair of Russian SKS's for 300 each and they are head and shoulders above any Norinco I've ever owned and there have been a few. If the used Russian is still in good shape, take that one.

A star on the top cover usually means Tula arsenal (Russian), but the top cover could have been swapped (I have a Russian with a Yugo top cover). A Russian would also have a blade bayonette (as would a Romanian a Yugo and some Chinese). If it has a spike type bayonette then it's likely Chinese.
What are the markings on the receiver? Look on both sides and on the botton. Also check the barrel. Somewhere there should be an import marking that says what country it came from as well as the caliber and the importer. A Chinese would also have some Chinese characters on it somewhere and may say Norinco.
$400 for a really nice Russian might not be too far off base (should be $350, but prices have been climbing). $650 for a Norinco is a rip off.

Yeah seems awfully high to me also. I bought one back in 1990 or 91 at a gun show in Ft Worth, a norinco for about $89.00 before tax. Traded it years ago. It was fun to shoot but not what I would call really accurate. Wish I still had it now. I could be shooting it or make some money selling it.

Yea, you aren't the only one saying that. Most folks sold them or boogered them up. They've appreciated quite a bit.

I was just at a gun show here in central Ohio and SKS rifles were selling for 300 - 325 for the Norinco's.
Saw 2 private individuals at a gun show last weekend here in NC with excellent looking norincos. One wanted 275, the other 300. They both left a couple of hours later with their SKSs still in their hands. That guy would be holding on to his $650 Norinco for a LOOOOOOOOONG time around here.

I bought a very nice laminate stock Russian for $250 from a member on another forum, and I bought a Norinco for $200 back in November.
The most I've paid for any of my SKS rifles was $350 for an all-matched Albanian.
$275 isn't ridiculous for a Norinco, but it's not particularly great, either.

That's the symbol for a Soviet (Russian) SKS made at the Tula arsenal. The Soviet model set the standard for the SKS'. See if you can talk him down ~$50.00.

Went back today and that Russian sks was still there. It has the star with the arrow inside of it. The date 1951 followed by what looks like a small letter l followed by a capital L standing up side down are the marks below the star and arrow. I looked it over pretty closely and all the numbers match and the bore looks good and all of the outer surfaces look the same ie they don't look like they've been replaced. Hell I think I gonna go back and get it.
By the way, I told you guys wrong the other day that was an ak he had priced at $650.00. He wanted $480.00 for the norinco sks rifles. Sorry about that I just got the prices backwards in my memory. I still think that is too high for a norinco though.

If you can get a nice condition 1951 Tula for about $400, I think you got a deal.
I went back to the pawn shop and the Tula sks was still there so I grabbed it.
Couldn't talk the guy down and ended up paying 400.00 for it. He wanted 419.00. Here are some pictures I'm afraid they aren't very good since this is my first time to try this.

Thats a fair price. I have a Norinco, and I like it because it is a "D" model for detachable magazine and it takes AK mags, as well as several aftermarket mags...
But, I want a Russian one too add to my collection of other Russian guns.

The "upside-down L" is a Cyrillic "G", standing for "godu", or "year", showing the date the rifle was manufactured.

Does the $600 Norinco take AK mags? I've seen some for 600 dollars but that was right after the Obama got elected. And another forum member wanted 600 for his last week that took AK mags. (I guess that's the going rate for them)?? Shoot for that kind of money I can spend $100 more and buy a Mini 30 brand new and fire the same cheap round and I bet with a new one more accurately also.
Also, what's up with the Romanian ones? I didn't realize how rare they were till I started poking around Gun broker and Guns America and realized you can't find them easily.

Looks good! Russians have the nicest stocks (well aside from those laminated East German ones).
Looks like you are missing the bayonet. You need to pick up a blade bayonet to make it complete.

The Norinco SKS's are worth a little more because they aren't imported any more. So they're worth a little more, but those prices are way too high, around here they run about $179 to $199. Russian's are a bit cheaper but hard to find.
