u gotta think of todays mentality if it aint broke dont fix it

the military caught alot of flack for adopting the 5.56 in the 60's so why screw with it unless there is something very big developed.

I think the "flak it caught" was justified, because 5.56mm is border line in effectiveness as an all purpose round. Last time around when they pushed for the 7.62x51 they went exactly the opposite way. Both times they were wrong. No matter how you look at it, a round somewhere between 6.3-7mm with a case of around 45 mm long is where it should be to give you the best of the two worlds, with a good balance between firepower, ballistics, range and controllability.

I think we are gonna be with the m-16 in one way or the other for the next 30 years and even then it will be kept for special use like the m1 was originally (people that need a small but powerful rifle)

i think the us military would be better off replacing the uppers with a larger caliber piston upper and that would make alot of people happy and work better

but right now we honestly dont have the $$$ for that kinda stuff with the enonomy or we will drive the entire country into a depression

The M16's/M4's are not particularly cheap either. They may be cheap bare bone but the army don't buy them like that. they come with accessories that are already standard on newer systems at the same or just slightly higher price.
In the case of the SCAR, the rifle has fewer parts, easier to produce, is more reliable and more simple then M16/m4. I think in the long run you most likely save money. Compared to what kind of money the millitary is spending on other things, new rifles are dirt cheap.

what we have " works" so why break it so lets just keep it and replace it when soe thing great enough comes along to rearsenal the entire military

Since the M-16 was in service most of the killing was done by the Air Force, artillery, supporting armor. The enemy M16 faced never had air cover. Is hard to judge how good at stopping the bad guys your rifles are when every time your infantry gets into the fight, you throw a 2000Lbs JDAM on the bad guy's head:D
I see so many clips on "Live Leak" and "you tube" with gunfights from Iraq or Afghanistan finished up by A10, Apache, C130 gunships, F16's moping up the place.:D:evil:
Pretty much anything is enough with so much support.:D

I dont think many people get this. Far too many think the military is sporting $900 6lbs carbines.

Per Sen. Coburn's report, we are paying $1400 for M4's

The same can be said for the Garand. And the Springfield to a lesser extent.

Until there is a vast change either in how to propel a cartridge, or a distinct advantage shown in some sort of directed energy technology, I have a hard time seeing the M-16/AR-15 platform be bested significantly.

They melted into a puddle.

All of them.

And now, for the HK purists, HK has re-cast the puddle into the plastic bits on the OTHER firearms you can't have, because you STILL suck, and they still hate you.

putting the BHO in the trigger guard right next to the extended mag release.

NOT inner monkey compatable*

(inner monkey is the person we become when panicked. lack of fine motor skills, exaggerated movements, reliance on brute force and training)

You know you're screwed when brute force doesn't work.

What became of the XM-8? Two (crappy) paintball markers were based off it, a few video games used it, and it may have been used in a movie or two. Not much.
