What's is my gun cabinet missing?

Yeah the Contender is nothing like a real pistol. If I wanted a pistol to hunt with I would get a Ruger Super Hawk in 454 Casull.

i think the lever gun/revolver combo is a great idea, especially in .44 mag. i have been looking at the ruger 77 in .357 or.44 and honestly, i think i would almost rather go that route instead of a lever action (i already have a 336 in 30-30). i guess it just comes down to your preference: bolt or lever.

I'd say you aren't a proper handgun hunter with one. The Contender is a stockless rifle.

i totally agree. my hunting handgun is a super blackhawk in .44 mag using iron sights. i like to keep it classic! :)

When I was really into big game hunting I had a 416 Remington Magnum and 338 Winchester Magnum. The 338Win-Mag was sold off and replaced with a 375 H&H Magnum. Both the 416Rem-Mag and 375H&H Mag are now gone also. What remains is a 30-06, 30-30, 223, and a 22RF. Only one shotgun remains a Remington 870 12Ga with a modified choke barrel and a rifle slug barrel. The Springer Spaniel is too old to hunt (after forty odd years of dogs this is the last one) now so the shotgun days are numbered also. As for hunting with handguns I’m not a firm believer but accept that others are. Is there anything in the gun cabinet missing no not really.

Matter of YOUR misinformed opinion. You ever fired one? It fits in an Uncle Mikes shoulder holster. Can a rifle do that? Hell, I've even concealed carried it....into the store for coffee under my hunting jacket after a hunt. :D

Hey, just because it'll outshoot every revolver on the planet and many rifles, don't mean it's a rifle. :D

i have a couple of blackhawks, but when I get serous about handgun hunting, out comes the contender.

Texaszach, a .375 H&H is kinda 'entry level' for some of the REALLY BIG elephants up here in the Hill Country. ;) Comparing the recoil of the .44 and .30-30 leverguns, all I can say is, I never noticed eneough difference between the two to make a difference... more a matter of range/ depth of penetration. As the rifles you HAVE are GTG for range, a short, handy .44 seems the order of the day.

If you REALLY wanna get traditional, quit using those modern single action revolvers. You're cheatin'......

Matter of perspective, maybe?

ok, ya got me there!:)

i have a .44 cap and ball that i have thought about using but truth be told, i just dont like cleaning BP guns. guess im just lazy lol!

I would enjoy a contender honestly.
What chambering do you usually pack mc?

Also I've been thinking about the levers more and the BLR seems to be calling my number... Though it'd take a good deal of saving I just love me some Brownings.

Thanks for all your input by the way guys

FWIW, we had a client bring a BLR in .325 to camp. he was an older fellow who couldn't work the action fast enough, which resulted in very frustrating jams. never seen another gun jam as much as his did. though i can't say i didn't try to convince him to leave that rifle here for me :D

Hey tornado I wonder if it had anything to do with being a wsm

A muzzleloader just doesn't seem to fire me up too much either. Here in Texas it wouldn't give me any extra hunting.

Personally I feel my gaps are a good ole pump shotgun, a good lever, and a couple pistols.
And I'll need a bigger cabinet.

im not certain, i don't have much experience with them. in fact, that was the first one I've ever seen operated in person.. i like the idea of a lever .44mag, but a marlin 45/70 would be pretty cool, too. also, you can never have too many .22s! winchester model 61s are amazing! 10/22s are fun to tinker with. can't go wrong with an 870 either. have you considered an encore platform? maybe for a handgun you could get a mark III? or a 1911?
