And I don't mean Saiga. What's something you can get nice and grimed up, beat the hell out of, and it'll keep on going boom when you pull the trigger? I had a Mossberg 500A before, and never had problems, but I cleaned it every time I shot, and it still rused.

What's a shotgun I can beat like a red headed step child and it'll keep going and going and going?

close your ears....

hate to tell you this....but its the saiga. they just keep going. you dont even have to clean it if you dont want too.

Yeah, it occured to me this may be the only thing of ak like reliability after I posed, but figured I'd see what you guys have to say on it anyway. Isn't the 970 just the winchester version of the moss 500? I'd prefer not to have another one..

No, the 870 is a Remington gun, the Mossberg 500 was an attempt to do the same thing it does cheaper. Then the 870 Express was brought out to compete with the Mossberg at the same price-point. I'm sure someone else will be along to give a much more complete history shortly, though. ;)

It sounds like you're just looking for a rust-free gun instead of one that will always go bang. Most pumps will always go bang. Both Remington and Mossberg make "marine" versions of their shotguns that are supposedly much more rust-prohibitive.

Another vote for the Remington 870.

Versatile, customizable (is that a word?), affordable, easily field stripped and cleaned anywhere with no tools required, and it works in any weather.

The Express models will rust a bit quicker than the blued models. There's always the Marine Magnum version that is very rust reistant.

If you are going to beat any shotgun to death, may I recommend a nice Rossi $89 special.;)

According to a number of reliable sources, the Remington 870 may start to develop cracked receivers and in general fall apart after firing somewhere around 500,000 rounds.

That's One Half of a MILLION rounds.

Even the vaunted AK-47 isn't capable of that.

The truth is, even most ultra-hard core clay pigeon shooters have never seen a worn out 870.

A good many of them have seen worn out Mossberg and Winchester aluminum guns.

o_O And where are these worn out aks you talk of? :neener:

I would say 870 as well. And emphasize that the "express" version embodies much of what makes AKs nice. Its quite inexpensive, not well finished or pretty, but absolutly functional.

Remington 870

When things go bump in the night, I turn to my 18.5'' cylinder bore 870 and good ol' double aught buck. Completely flawless operation, clean or filthy.
Plain jane, no frills, no BS shotgun.

:)

Saiga 12, you silly. :D You /can/ beat the snot out of it and it'll keep on running. Plus you can use it on clays for the amusement of all your friends.

Another vote for 870

Mine still looks pretty close to new. Has maybe 8-10,000 rounds thru it. Rain, snow....turkeys, ducks, geese, deer, and lots of clays

Biggest problem I've had is.......wait, I haven't had any problems

Having seen this done, I agree 100%. What a hoot...."Bam Bam Bam Bam Bam!"

I use my 870 like a farm tool. On my last goose hunt we did some spot/stalk. Belly crawled 200 yards in a muddy cow trail with my shotgun in my hand, pulling and pushing off of it. The shells in the buttstock shellholder were caked with mud, as was the gun.

When we sprung up on the birds I had to reload and loaded in a pretty muddy shell. Of course a 3"mag with mud on it jammed the action after firing, I took a knee, grabbed the forestock and slammed the butt into the ground and the empty popped out.

I came home, cleaned everything with a soapy rag, oiled it, and put it away.

The AK is a semi-auto... you lookin' for the same in a shotgun? Your gettin' a bunch of recommendations (of which I agree) for the 870, which as you know is a pump.

When I initially read your thread title I thought you were interested in a semi-auto shotty.
