What's the 'classic' IDPA ESP gun?

I'm working on a graphics project and I want to show a representative gun for each IDPA division. So far I figure as follows:

CDP -- basic 1911 of course.
SSP -- 5" Glock.
ESR -- S&W 625.
SSR -- S&W M&P (the old one, not that new auto), or a Colt Python?
ESP -- Here's where I'm kind of stuck:

What's pistol is most visually recognizable as an ESP gun? The classic ESP gun I assume is a .38 Super 1911, but that won't do 'cause it looks just like the CDP guns. So what's a gun that's usually or always ESP? Browning Hi-Power? CZ75?

Somebody here will know! Thanks in advance,
Pat

Not many BHPs in IDPA.
How much resolution will your graphics have?
To be definitely ESP you would have to have a CZ75SA with its distinctive straight trigger. I have shot my regular CZ75 in SSP by manually uncocking.

H&K P7 is obligate ESP and very recognizeable.
SIG P210 is ESP but not a real good one unless you show the late model with side button magazine catch and enlarged safety.

I have a soft spot for the Python in SSR, I shot one a full season plus years of PPC and some IPSC.

as above a 9mm 1911/2011 or an ssp pistol with a magwell/external mods.

IMHO the best & "classic" ESP gun is a 9mm Steel Frame 1911. Why? B/C of starting w/ 10 rounds (9+1) in the gun. The next time you shoot SSP or CDP... see how many times you shoot 1 round on a target, reload & re-engage that same target. Many stages are 10 round friendly!

You are missing the point. He wants to do a PICTURE clearly illustrating the different divisions. A 9mm 1911 looks like a .45 1911. Not the purpose here.

If you are getting an advantage out of a 9+1 gun because there are largely double tap targets and you can reload on the transition, your MD is in a rut and should stir things up with some 3 or more shot targets and some steel.

Right on about the picture. IF not a 1911 then an all steel CZ ought to rank right up there.

As an aside the 1911 in 9MM has such low recoil it is almost like cheating. I have mixed stages up any way you can and the 1911 in 9MM with it's low recoil pulse just is a very fast gun.

Take Care

ahh, but it's not;)

I shoot 1911 pattern 9mm guns in ESP. My Colt 1991A1 will feed 9mm from McCormick 10-shot .38 Super magazines, at least with heavy roundnose loaded long. My Springfield MixMaster A lightweight won't. Guess which one gets out more. I anxiously await the Metalform X-tended 9mm and .38 magazines to go with their .40, .45, and 10mm; or the smallbore Tripp Cobramags.

But they may all be obsoleted by the .45 Minor gun and loads I have in the works.

Well, it's hardly "classic". But the new staple I see in the ESP class would have to be the Springfield XD's. It's definately a noticeably different design gun, and from what I've seen at my club, dominates the ESP class.

P-35 used to be the "Classic" ESP pistol, now if one can find an all-steel Commander with the Colt Factory lightened 9mm slide, it may be the "Classic" ESP pistol.
Have one & the same but can't shoot it as fast as the G34 am used to shooting, even with the far superior trigger of the Colt Commander!:scrutiny:

I've shot:

- SW 952 (don't see those too often) :)
- Springfield EMP

I'm waiting on my Les Baer Premier II 9mm to come in and it will be my ESP gun from then on.

In the ESP division, you close your eyes and will the bullets towards the target. Sorry :D

I shoot SSP and CDP - keeping my eyes open doesn't help that much. :D

Wished I knew what all these abbreviations meant?
U dont know ESP, SSP, CDP? OMG LOL! JK. :)

If you go to idpa.com or just google "IDPA divisions" you'll find more than you could want to know. If you have a centerfire handgun and you don't shoot IDPA, well, you should.

While most folks think of a 9mm 1911 for ESP, you said you wanted something else.

How 'bout - a glock with a mag well or any XD.

Well, I'm probably going to go with the XD, (in fact I have in my first draft) since that's the one I see the most by far at matches. Until being enlightened by the folks here, I'd assumed that they were in the SSP division, probably just because they look a little like Glocks.

(Because I shot CDP, I paid no attention to anything that wasn't a 1911 -- until this year; now only revolvers matter. ;))
