My Ruger SP101 3" carried around the year IWB ... conceals perfectly, I wouldn't want a shorter barrel ... but I could probably live with the 4" Sp 101.
Once winter I carried a 6" Colt Official Police in a Border Patrol holster under an Air Force parka. But mostly a 4" is my maximum. I've carried N-frame S&Ws in pancakes and K-frames in IWB rigs comfortably.
Before my son moved out and took it with him I was about convinced that a 4" M15 was a good choice for all but the hottest weather.
When the Texas Rangers caught up with John Wesley Hardin in Florida he was carrying an eight inch barrel 1860 Army percussion revolver under his shirt--it got caught in his suspenders when he tried to draw it, and one of the rangers conked him with his 7 1/2" Colt Single action army.
I carry a 3" Taurus PT 111 or a 2" Colt Detective Special in my pants pocket, and I am not wanted by the law.
For me, 4" is ideal for carry on the belt, though up to 5.5" is OK with the relatively compact SAA. 6" and up is better carried a shoulder rig. This is my personal experience; I am 6' tall.
5" in a good shoulder rig, although I do carry a 4 5/8" Blackhawk on a OWB crossdraw from time to time. But, the holster for the Blackhawk is a custom job that has little cant, and mounts high on the belt. It's amazingly comfortable while driving and easily accessable.
In my early LEO days (80's) I frequently carried my 4 inch model 29 and 25 in one, and one of my post retirement jobs was a security director for a large church where my responsibility was observation from a large balcony. I carried a 7 1/2 inch old model Vaquero in one, being able to take the 35 to 50 yard shot to protect the Pastor.
Concealed....revolver....barrel....um I'd max it at 4" and that's with some reservation. IMHO a 2" - 3" would be about tops. I want that weapon to clear and be on target in a blink so it behooves me to carry short. Preference pure and simple.
