Whats the most that you will pay for a knife?

Ed Fowler, Chris Reeve, D'Holder, Ralph Bone. . . . . I guess the most I've paid for a single knife is around $600 but when i think of the number of times I've actually done that I get a little dizzy. :eek:
 
Most.....unsure, but as I've got a 2K+ firearm, I'm sure I can easily spend that much. Though I find outstanding working customs for less than $500.

While I can appreciate safe queens, I can't spend the money on something that will just sit in a safe.

$90 for a Grip ? Ouch...fixed or folder ? Folder can be bought for under $40 and the fixed for $69.95
 
I'll pay what I think is a fair price. So far the most I've spent is $200. Although anything with 3 digits in the price tag tends to wind up on a shelf to show off. I refuse to baby a blade although I take care of them so I want something I am not afraid to use. Current carry knife is one of the larger Kershaw Onion designs (I forget the name off hand). My PC blade at work is a Kershaw Chive. The one I have gotten the most use out of is a Buck Woodsman-my first knife, got it when I was 12 and still have it (I'm 52 today)-which they still make so should say something about the design.

Knowing you, it's probably a very nice, verrry functional piece and probably being used.

The thing is, I really really really enjoy production knives. I stay away from customs like my dad's an alcoholic and they only sell 'em in the back room at the bar.

So really it's ~$50 x some twenty knives..
 
$100 +/- $20 is my practical limit. I couldn't pay more for a knife and still be able to use it without worrying too much about it.

So far, the most expensive knife I own cost me around $50.
 
I have yet to break the $700 mark, but have exceeded $600 three or four times. Two were custom Striders, one was a pre-owned Bagwell Bowie which had been sharpened incorrectly, therefore the low price, and a custom as-new Randall Number One may have run a bit over six. I recently won an internet auction for a sword which would have cost $700 new, but the seller was new, with no feed-back, and I got it for less than half that. One of the Striders, a limited Joel Pirela collaboration, I traded for another limited Strider plus cash to get my money back.

If I set any new spending records, it will either be for a custom sword, or a Bagwell Bowie, the latter preferably made for my hand size and other body dimensions. That will run into four figures.
 
The most expensive knife I carry and use is a Strider AR, about $350-$400. If there is time to dig out a cheaper Spyderco or Victorinox, I will do so. I try to save the AR for heavy-duty emergencies, such as the time I opened it and was about to pry a windshield loose from a patrol car. One of my co-workers was inside, unconscious, or perhaps already dead at that point, and the doors were jammed. As it was, the door was finally pried open by the firemen just before I started prying the windshield. Yes, I know you shouldn't pry with a knife, but when a life is in imminent peril, you do what you must with what you have.

Edited to add: Well, now that I think about it, I have carried my Stellite and Ti MSC Karambits a few times, but it is not a habit.
 
Mr. Gwinn, if your last post/question was directed at me, thanks, but I am not looking to trade anything right now. The knives mentioned in my first post above, are a Mick Strider Custom Stellite Karambit, and Strider-Pirela Operator #8, in addition to the Randall and Bagwell Bowie already mentioned. I parted with the Operator to help finance a trip to the Blade Show.
 
My most expensive users right now would be my Emerson custom CQC-8's and Commander. Paid $550 or so for each one. Normally my users run the area of $300-$475 and are normally production or semi-custom, like Randalls, and a couple Sebenzas. On any given day I carry several knives, usually a couple customs and a couple productions. Lately I've thrown a few Spyderco's and Cold Steel pieces into the mix for mundane cutting needs and to try out different designs and such. As for my limit, I don't really know. If the knife is something I like, and has fit/finish and construction that I feel is worth the price, then I'd have to say the sky's the limit basically. I also like to use everything I buy, regardless of the price, if I think it will just sit around and have no purpose, then I generally try not to buy it. My most expensive edged weapon would be my Howard Clark L6 Katana, followed closely by a piece from Rick Barrett, and then a very nice Nambokucho style katana from the late Bob Engnath.
 
That's some crazy stuff, I thought 200.00 was extravagant. I really like those knife shows selling 20 piece lock-blade bone handle blah blah collectors for 15.00... pffft!
 
just curious of the people who say they could bring themselves to use a $100+ knife , how much do they spend on their firearms ?
Do they have a limit where they say " I paid $600 for this gun , I couldnt ever shoot it ".

Point is , regardless of the price , it should do the job it is required to do , and if it does it well , why not use it ?
 
That's true John. Once I paid over $5k for my Uzi then knives didn't seem so expensive. If you want expensive try becomg a knifemaker, right? :)

The question is how much will you spend on a knife? Guess it depends on how much money I have in my pocket when the whim strikes me. I honestly doubt it would exceed $1000. I have been pretty happy with knives valued well under $500 so far and I don't know enough to speculate on them as investments.
 
Okay, post 18 in this thread from 2003 needs to be updated.

I've since spent 2800.00 for a Bagwell Hells Belle, 1800.00 for a Greg Hamilton bowie and 600.00 on a folder or two.

Imagine the next Bagwell will be well over 3K with the "special" handle material I'm having put on the next Hells Belle. It's 10,000+ year old Mastadon Ivory.:D
