When are the ammo prices gonna drop?

I know that precious metal and ammo prices have skyrocketed since the war started.....My question is, since the war will likely be over soon (or at least the US will be removing it's forces overseas) does anyone know if the ammo prices will plummet to back near the prices they were a few years ago? I am in no way trying to start a political thread or war talk...just curious if I should buy ammo at todays prices or wait and see if it gets cheaper.

If the ammo companies are selling everything they can make at current prices, why should they lower prices? Remember what happened this past summer with gas prices. People stopped driving, walked, took the bus, carpooled,bought more fuel efficient cars, etc. When demand went down, prices dropped like a rock. The law of supply and demand will control the price of ammo, gas, food, housing,drugs, and everything else we buy. The market always wins.

I can't see the prices going down. 8mm is through the roof for mil surplus and 761x51 is over 50c a round. The price of the materials hasn't gone up that much!

From local debates, two things I expect during the next administration: a ban on import of ammunition (which would really hit the Russian firearms) and sharply increased taxes on ammunition sales. You have time to watch the market and "test the wind"...but look for deals!

Gas prices have dropped because, well, everyong uses scads of gas every day. Ammo? Even if tens of millions of Americans own guns, the majority don't. And most owners don't exactly go through ammo like some of us do. Petroleum is essential for our economy; ammo is for our hobby, and possibly to save our lives. If you hold your breath until ammo prices drop, don't forget to post the number of your doctor here first!

A reason to expect a drop in the price of ammunition would be because of the decline in the price of raw materials. Copper is down close to 50 cents a pound, and copper to $1.50, which is where they were five or more years ago, when ammo was so cheap. In theory, the price of ammunition of ammunition should start dropping. Surplus ammunition won't ever be so cheap again, since the stocks of it are drying out; new production ammo, however, should get cheaper again, in theory. Whether drastically lower raw materials prices will translate into cheaper ammunition, I don't yet know. Maybe someone older than I can speak to what has happened during past recessions, not counting ones that were also times of inflation.

As a brass dealer, I see the scrap metal price fluctuate weekly and I can tell you DEMAND is driving the prices right now! in the week after the election, Wolf 7.62x39 ammo increased in price from $189/K case to over $300 in many local stores and you should have seen the Crossroads of the west Gunshow last weekend! People are freaked out and maybe rightly so... Time will tell. But if you are waiting for the prices to drop to buy your ammo then you may find yourself in a huge dilemma as Hussein Obama starts to make good on his promise of "Change". First week of August, Yellow brass was @ $1.80/ pound and currently sits @ $.65 so by that standard we should see a drop in components but The days of "surplus" ammo are short if not gone! Import has already been blocked of all the steel core chinese ammo to feed the $49 sks's we all bought in the 90's! I hope we each value our rights as US citizens and will stand and fight politically or we may need the ammo we hav on hand to fight a civil war... Now, wouldnt THAT put Obama in the history books?

yep....parisite is correct. Ain't no reason for retailers to drop their price as long as there are lines of folks willin' to pay the price already on the box. Kinda the whole idea behind our Capitalistic society. So iffin the rest of you ammo scroungers/hoarders would quit buying ammo and reloading supplies, give or take a few months, I might be able to afford a litttle more.

If there were people with wads of cash beating your door down to buy overpriced ammo would you lower the price? People are really scared these days, uncertain of future supplies they are buying ANYTHING and EVERYTHING they can get their hands on.

Supply and Demand still rules

The People's Republic of China had been buying up scrap lead and copper (brass) and steel for their continuing manufacturing boom. I understand the credit bust has China in somewhat shaky status for credit and manufacturing there is starting to stall somewhat.

With less demand overseas, we may see a drop in component costs. Ammo may not drop radically in the next week or so, but I expect bullets (I reload) to perhaps fall somewhat in the next year. At least, they won't go 'up' in relation to general inflation.

With government interference - such as bans, restrictions or added taxation - the market for ammo and components may take an upturn. We need to keep reminding everyone in 'power' this is what cost the Democrats the House and Senate in 1994. Remind them a lot, they're not all that bright.

When everyone stops buying ammo 5,000 rounds at a time. I went to a local gun show on Friday, you would have thought the world was ending, it was so packed you could barely move, it was miserable, plus everything was $50-100 overpriced.

I echo XD's observation...I was at a show here in Columbus today (Saturday)and it was ridiculous...wall to wall people and prices out the wazoo. Couldn't believe the prices for the ammo as well as reloading components.

IMHO, we're still dealing with the panic/emotion-related effects of Obama's (and for gun stuff, Biden's) election. People are still in hoarding mode since it's a big unknown what's going to happen, but personally I think Obama et al. are going to have MUCH bigger fish to fry than worry about gun control for a while.

That doesn't, of course, mean that we don't continue pressing our rights and informing politicians, etc. but I think the frenzied buying will settle down here shortly...it almost has to, because sooner or later people aren't going to have any more money left to buy the stuff and/or room in the safe to store it!
