I have a buddy looking for the magazine spring retainer for a Remington 870 Express. Anyone know where you can get these? He has been looking with no luck, and I told him I'd look around online for him thinking it would be easy to find one. So far, I've only found the ones for the older Wingmasters.

Thanks guys. However, the Midway one is the one I keep seeing, and isn't the correct one. These wont fit the Express models.

For Brownells, in the schematic it shows the older style also, but doesn't have a specific picture for the part. Do you know if it's the one that is correct for these?

Do you really need the retainer for the gun to work?

For what it's worth, my 870 Express works fine without a retainer. I'm just careful when removing the cap. It didn't come with a retainer as it came from the factory with an extended magazine, and to go back to standard capacity I just put a regular mag spring and end cap on.

Well, Brownell's should know.
If it says 870 Express, they will send you the right one.

Or, you could call and conferm with one of the gun techs.
It's free.

Or, you could call the Remingtons Parts Department.

As many people as have de-dimpled their newer model Express guns there ought to be a lot of them on eBay and Gunbroker...

I have an older Express, (1985) that did not have a dimpled tube, came with metal trigger group and has a milled extractor. Came with 2 barrels, 28" Rem-Choke and a 20" rifle sighted. $207 new. I took out my retainer when I put a Reminton 2 shot extension tube on it. Must have dumped it because it's not in my parts box. If I find it i'll give it to you. The retainer on mine was metal too.

Two types of Spring Retainer for 870

I recently had the same problem and researched this only a week ago.
The 870 spring retainer comes in two types. The old style metal one and the new style plastic cylinder type. Both available online at Hoosier Gun Works.
When I replaced my spring retainer I also went ahead and replaced the spring and follower. The beat up follower was actually jamming the gun. When I went to remove the follower the spring launched throwing the retainer accross the room. Never did find it. This 20 ga 870 Wingmaster is my favorite skeet gun. Since I wore out the follower and lost the retainer might as well get a new spring too. Easy fix. Thousands upon thousands of rounds and still works great. This shotgun is only 3 years old..........minimum of 100 shells per week.
Wish they made a Wingmaster 410 with choke tubes.

I never used that retainer and never had a problem. Yes spring under tension will fly.

I took an 870 in for some work that didn't have the spring retaining cap. I told the gunsmith about it [to him a headsup] and all was good. Got it back and the gunsmith said he put a new cap in. Didn't really want it but oh well. So the next time I cleaned it I tried to get the cap out. I did but I buggered the cap up so much that I tossed it out. So now I do like before. I just put my hand over the magazine tube when I unscrew the cap so the spring won't fly out. Bt the way. The gunsmith was at Gander Mtn. so you can try there for your part.

Here's a plastic one for the newer dimpled 870 express guns:
