I am trying to find out if it is feasible to buy a short-barreled shotgun for home defense. You know; one that has a barrel that only extends to the end of the gas tube, but not longer. Like the kind you would expect a SWAT team to use as an entry gun. Are there any online gun shops that show different models for sale? And I understand that I would need to buy a tax stamp from the BATFE also. Any help would be appreciated!

An SBS (short-barreled shotgun) is not allowed in Illinois. However, an AOW (Any Other Weapon) is currently allowed in Illinois. An AOW has to start life without a buttstock and can never have a buttstock. Here is an AOW based on a Remington 870:

Yes, although Class 3 dealers are probably very scarce in Illinois. You might be able to find one through Serbu Firearms.

If you are able to buy an AOW through a dealer, the transfer tax is $5. If you make an AOW from a factory PGO (pistol grip only) shotgun, the making tax is $200.

I've never found that an extra 4" of barrel was any handicap in a defensive shotgun. My 870 with an 18" barrel and a 12.5" LOP stock is 37.5" long overall from knurled Colonial Arms choke tube to KickEez recoil pad, and it's a LOT easier to use in a defensive role than what is essentially a breaching gun.

And it takes a LOT less paperwork to own as well.

You guys are a big help! Maybe the AOW in 20 guage would be managable. Or I'll just go with a regular size shotgun.

Who me?

I gotta Youth Single Shot 20 ga shotgun handy and the loading is slugs.
Fixed Modified barrel, factory bead, and factory recoil pad.
I tricked it out with a Koplin butt cuff that holds 5 more slugs.
That is it!

Other Serious Situations Guns, I have used, or still do depending where I be:

-1974 Win SX1, 28" barrel with Nu-Line extended knurled choke with ~ 300,000 rds I have personally put through the gun, which still runs like a top.
-1100 12 ga and 20 ga 26" with fixed choked barrels running from 26" to 30" in Skeet to Full
-Beretta 303, 12 and 20 bore, again with fixed choked barrels in Skeet to full.
-Browning Citori 3 barrel Skeet Gun
-Win 1300 bone stock
-870s in all 4 gauges, bone stock
etc...

OEF_ VET I just thought might want to make a sale...

Now I have assisted with armored car folks learning to shoot Dept Issued PGOs and I hate these things, and so did these guards...
I started them off with full stocked shotguns, and once basic fundamentals shared, moved to PGO
NObody ever bought PGO for personal home use, these guards used Full Stocked guns for HD.
A few, only bought PGO for backup for Work Reasons only.

Then again I never felt undergunned using a Krieghoff, Perazzi, or Beretta high end Skeet gun for serious use either...

My wittle single shot with slugs takes really big bites...

I haven't measured it, but my Maverick 88 with the 18-1/2" barrel and normal stock is still pretty darn handy when things go Bump! in the night.

I did try a PGO (Pistol Grip Only) a couple of times...not good. One time, we had some pretty darn Serious loads in the gun (3" Mag Buck). Forgot that fact, and somebody tossed one of those dreaded "Clay" targets. Swung it up..BOOM!!! "OW!!! QUIT IT!! OH *********** That Hurts!!!" Foggy screamed, with blood flowing profusely from split lips & mooshed (but not broken) nose.

My new nickname for a couple of weeks was Rocky Raccoon.

Since you are listed as living in Illinois double check if you can even get a tax stamp. State laws are more restrictive on this in Illinois than in other states.

BATFE recently approved an Application to Transport Interstate for my AOW with an Illinois address as the destination. They wouldn't have done so if AOWs were illegal in Illinois.

As far as I know, every other type of NFA firearm is illegal in Illinois. :barf:

Because SBS's are illegal in Illinois, DO NOT LET PEOPLE SEE IT UNNECESSARILY. "Legally" it's not a SBS, it's an AOW, but at first glance a cop(or someone who may tell a cop you have it) is going to see an illegally short shotgun, so try to avoid mix ups.

I personally would suggest getting an 18" barreled shotgun, with a pistol grip if you feel you need a short shotgun, just for the fact that you don't need alot of papers, and you'll never need to explain to a cop the difference between a SBS and an AOW from the back of a police cruiser. As they've said though, that AOW is going to kick like a mule(though I can't attest to that fact myself), and then some. Heck, a normal 12 ga with a full stock kicks pretty good.

Mossberg puts out a 12 ga 18.5" bbl PGO 500 "Cruiser", runs about $250-$300 in the "JIC" kits. Never tried one myself, but it's the same shotgun impact modifies to have a 14" bbl, plus it's 200 bucks cheaper, since they didn't need to pay the 200 bucks to modify.

Forgot that fact, and somebody tossed one of those dreaded "Clay" targets.
Did you atleast hit it :D?
