So I have made up my mind, I am moving, ok well 99% sure anyways. I have always wanted to live out west and I have a few choices. Focusing in on gun laws, range access, open carry, ammo prices, cost of living (more for shooting), ect where would you live

I hate the gambling and casinos but Reno is an attractive area. Anything near Lake Tahoe is beautiful.

Although I must confess, I lived in Tucson for a few years and really enjoyed it.

I guess Salt Lake City is possible I have not looked into getting a job there but if a Mod wants to add it to the poll for me it would be helpful.

<BullfrogKen was here . . . Salt Lake City has been added.>

I don't know much about any but Denver. It doesn't seem that liberty friendly, but maybe that's just a city thing. I've never lived in a city.

Denver

I only voted for Denver because I grew up in the Denver area and all of my family is in Colorado. Denver has grown to become LA East. :fire: All the da** Kalifornians have gotten fed up with where they live and moved to Colorado. Now the fools want to change Colorado to what they left behind. :banghead: Gripes my behind. :cuss: they have caused the cost of living to sky rocket and housing is so high it is hard to afford a decent place to live. Getting started there is expensive. :what: I think I would go to Salt Lake if I were you. Salt Lake is like Denver was 25 years ago. Also very gun friendly.:)

I won't pretend to be an economics expert about SLC or any other city, but Utah's permit is among the most universally recognized. On the other hand, you don't have to be a Utah resident to hold a Utah permit. (Although some states won't honor a non-resident permit.)

I came through Reno on my way to CA, I have to imagine that Utah's economy is at LEAST as healthy as Reno.

Since you left Salt Lake off the list, I went with Reno. Pretty nice place, my Mom used to live near there.

Avoid Vegas, I've been there a few times, and with all the gangers I seen, drug deals going on in the hotels I've been in (affordable? for Vegas standards) and just plain wicked traffic, it's not that pretty. But that's just me, others I've talked to love the place.

i lived in tucson for 15 years. It gets crazy hot, but if you can find a job, it's a great place to live.. Work took me to CA, but i miss the desert.

I've lived in 3 of the cities listed.

Denver is all big city and everything that goes with that. Beautiful mountains to the west, flat open prairie and farmland to the east. I understand that the Californians have ruined it. Hope you like snow.

Las Vegas. I lived in Henderson, which is joined at the hip to LV. This town grew too fast, and home prices reflect this. They are also maxed out on their water supply. 100 to 115 degrees for most of the summer and can get pretty humid in August or so. Lots of shooting areas outside of town and decent gun laws for now. Large influx of Californians and New Yorkers may change that. If you gamble, or think you might, live elsewhere. They didn't build those billion dollar hotels on winners.

Reno. I think I would be happier in Sparks or Carson City. All the benifits, without the problems. Reno is slowly getting some bad laws when it comes to guns. It is located in a good spot though. Hot summers and snow in the winter.

I've visited Phoenix and Tucson. They seem to be much like Vegas, without the casinos and about 10 degrees hotter on the average. Their desert is prettier, though, and they have some spectacular scenery. I've heard that their gun laws are great.

Right where I am in coastal So. Oregon. Ocean view and mean temp.
at 68 degrees the year round. Forested, mountain, wilderness area.
Moved here in 1988 and been everywhere except south and east. No
more desert or high population density for me !!! I can tavel to snow
without living in it.

Phoenix all the way. The Economy is booming and gun laws are good. I just bought a brand new house (1600 Sq Ft) for under 200k. The housing market was crazy for a couple years but it has calmed down a bit and is definitely a buyers market. I gets hot but thats why you have AC. The winters are wonderful and your only a couple hours drive to a couple nice ski resorts.

You might think about Colorado Springs...

Only 60 miles (depending on where you want to count CS ending and D beginning) south of Denver without most of the Denver gun problems...

Reno is slowly getting some bad laws when it comes to guns. It is located in a good spot though. Hot summers and snow in the winter.

Reno has no specific gun laws at all that I am aware of beyond the usual "discharging in city limits yada yada". Nevada has a state law that supercedes local firearms laws with the only exception allowed being the restrictions as stated regarding where you can discharge a firearm.

Nevada in general is quite gun friendly. Even Las Vegas is not bad once you factor in the "register your handguns" crap. We will try again next session to
get rid of that one from the state level. Weather is great. No ifs ands or buts about it. It can get cold in the winter but it seldom does. It can be hot in the summer but it seldom gets over 100 and when it does get above 90 it is not usually humid. I went to college in Lincoln one year and I can say without a fact that our weather is superior in every way to that area unless you do not like desert. Reno is much like No. Colorado weatherwise except we don't get as much rain or snow. I grew up in No Co in the 60's it was great back then. Now it is California. No Nv. was wonderful when I moved here 15+ years ago. Now it too is being California. Aside from the
rampant growth and the influx of GayBay liberals this is still a great place.

I guess if I had to live in one of them I would choose Denver. But somewhere just outside of Denver would be better. DON'T MOVE TO SALT LAKE!! That place sucks. It is ok to visit but I would never live there. Too many mormons for me.

I voted for Denver, though Reno is a very close second. I live outside Denver right now - been here less than a year. When you say you're considering Denver, what you really mean is the Front Range of Colorado -- you don't want to live in Denver, trust me. Denver is the only city in Colorado that has been allowed by the state Supreme Court to do junk like ban some firearms, ban open carry, etc. Aurora, I believe, is in Denver county, so I'd advise that you stay away from there too. If you can make it to either Colorado Springs or Fort Collins, you'd be in heaven. If you're determined to stay near Denver, then Arvada, Wheat Ridge, Westminster, Thornton, parts of Lakewood, and Littleton are reasonably priced for the area (and you avoid the firearms issues).

I noticed that several people suggested Salt Lake. I was recruited for a job there earlier this year, so researched the place. The housing prices there are out of sight. They've had several years in a row of 15%+ appreciation on housing, lots are very small -- the Denver area actually has cheaper real estate now than does Salt Lake. I was amazed, and didn't end up taking that job.

Reno is very nice, but just too close to CA for my taste.

I would love to be 25 miles from the nearest person, however my line of work requires me to work in cities or very close to it. Thanks for all the help and advice so far I look forward to more stories and votes =D

I vote Phoenix, because I live here, but as soon as I finish my diesel tech training I am out of here I think. Montana is tops on my list, with northern AZ second. I will just need a couple weeks of vacation to explore my options.

Why a big city? I avoid Boise which is under 250,000. Every time I am there, like today, I can't wait to leave and am so thankful all those people like to be congested. I would, and have picked a small area where the larger area or city is available to me but I don't have to live in it. We can shoot within 3 or 4 minutes of the door and till a divorce a few years ago, off the porch, and I will again I hope.

I didn't vote as none of those would be my choice but if had to move to one it would be Reno. Lots of open country close by, in a hour or two you can be completely without people at all. The Sierras are beautiful and you can see the ocean once in a while. Nevada's gun laws are not bad, except Clark county ( Vegas) plenty or public land to use or shoot on etc. You have all four seasons but winters are very mild compared to Denver and where you picked in Az. is to hot for my taste.
