Where's a good place to put a gun in your car?

Grab handle over the window

I used to place a pistol in the grab handle over the window on the right side.
Can't see it from outside and most won't look for it from inside.
It did fall out while I hit a huge pot hole while transporting a nutcase antigun female. She tried to kick a nice pre model 70 Colt 1911 to death.

I keep a gun between the seats. It works if the seats are close together. The most accessible place is probably cross draw, but if you don't want it on your person, get a cheap holster (Uncle Mikes comes to mind.) and sew it to the seat between your legs. Switch gun into whatever you keep it in for carry when you get out. But if you are like me, you probably will leave it in there a lot. So, a discrete towel would be useful on the seat when you walk away from the car.

This all assumes this is legal in your state. It would be in mine.

I've rigged up what I once saw called a "Jamacian" holster. 1.5" nylon strap runs front to back over the seat portion of the drivers seat. Took a Uncle Mikes #1, removed the belt carry strap, and had a bit of that nylon strap sewn on so the other strap could pass through it vertically.

Now the Uncle Mikes and either my Judge or my Glock 26 sits between my legs, just below knee level. Black strap, black guns, black car interior, tinted windows ... I just toss a black towel over the seat when I get out and you never know they are there.

You need to check your state laws. In S.C. it needs to be in a glove box ,console or truck.Under the seat, and you are likely to go to jail.

This doesn't apply if you have a CWP. In that case, you're allowed to keep it "on or about" your person. So under a jacket in the front passenger seat would be ok.

But yeah, on your hip or perhaps a shoulder holster is the best place!

Build your own

Build a magical flip down gun holder under your dash just like a famous Private Eye

Seriously, I'm too worried about theft where I live to leave a weapon in my vehicle. Mounting a holster on the driver side roof might work depending on how curved the underside of your roof is.

My gun is always on my hip. Yet this is not a good place while driving. Not only is it uncomfortable, it's damned hard to get to if I need it. If I need it, I will probably need it NOW, not after I get underneath my seatbelt, any clothing I may have on, while leaning forward, and any other time consuming processes I need to perform. Plus, it's not a really good idea to inform an officer who has pulled you over that you are armed, then have to reach back behind you to get your wallet/insurance/licence.

So. Get yourself a cheap ambidextrous holster that fits your weapon, (ambidextrous because they usually have a Velcro strip that attaches the belt loop to the side so that it can be swapped) chuck the belt loop, get some heavy-duty adhesive Velcro and cut two small patches the size of the belt loop Velcro pads on the holster, and stick them between the console of your vehicle and the seat. Insert the holster and.....

TA-DA! You now have a holster that holds your weapon securely in an ACCESSIBLE location. It won't slip down between the seats, it wont fall out while cornering, if you need it IT'S RIGHT THERE! You can easily place it into your holster while exiting, and into the vehicle when entering.

It depends on the vehicle. When my wife drove a Passat, there was a nice 2"x11", 6 inch deep opening just under the steering wheel for the owner's manual. I made a lock box to fit the space, and put a Walther P5 in it. Keeping the key in the lock, you could brush your right hand under the wheel, turn the key, and a spring would open the box and present the gun readly to hand, and all out of view of a thief.

Sorry, no carjackers tried anything...

WOW, all this talk about guns is ummmmmm well hell git er' done, i love both my fanny pack and sholder holster, either way it is always close if i am not at work....

Car safe

Cool concept with the car safe. It isn't anywhere close to being rigid enough to do any more than keep honest people honest and maybe keep a few stupid people alive. The steel isn't anything special and way to thin to trust valubles in. And the lock design looks like something they took from a kids piggy bank. I would be in that safe in less than 30 seconds if I took my time. However, I do have experience in the art of disassembly. You might as well use a wet brown paper bag for safe keeping.

The idea of using the cable to secure the safe is useless. Might as well just route a cable through the the trigger guard of the gun.

One more vote for "on your hip".
I used to keep a gun in my glove box until it was stolen. I have since gotten it back but have stopped leaving one in the car. If, and when, you you really need it how are you going to find the time to unlock a vault?

It didnt stay in there 24/7, but here's my old setup:

Pics aren't the greatest as they were taken at night, the car didn't have a battery, and my digital camera sucks...

But anyway, its a Glock 19 in a blade tech holster with a mount I made myself. I'm planning on a similar setup for my current ride, but haven't had time to hack the middle 20% out of my 60/40 buckets or building a console to fill that 20% up.

One officer was really impressed with it. He didn't disarm me, but after disclosing my EDC and my car gun, he just wanted to see the mount. Then he asked about my gripwork. We talked guns for a few minutes, he told me to fix my tail light, or slow down, or whatever, and sent me on my way.

In Ohio, with a CCW in a vehicle it has to be in a HOLSTER, on your person, or in a zippered pouch, or in your glove box, or center console. Your glove box, or console doesn't have to be locked. But gun must be concealed.
I almost always carry in my front pocket of my pants. In the old days they used to call my body type......Husky.....which nowadays means Fat. Needless to say getting to my gun from my pocket presents a contortionists nightmare. Same thing when I occasionally carry at 4 o'clock IWB.
The center console has it's own problems.
In the winter I just transfer to my coat pocket, usually the inside pocket on the left, almost in the same area as a shoulder holster. but for summer....
I have slipped into a gray area. I took a right hand Uncle Mikes holster, sewed a flap on the front ( barrel ) part of the holster, that wraps around behind the holster and velcros to the front side. I have wrapped this around my seat belt.
I can transfer from pocket to holster, and slide the holster on the seat belt to cross draw, and down to my left enough to be concealed.
Now I don't know if this would still be considered " on My person" or not.
I don't like leaving my gun in the car either. But sometimes this is a must. When this occurs I use the metal cabled lock box.

Just always lock your vehicle, beyond that, who cares.

I had two cops once find a dozen handguns in my truck when they searched it. They were just being jerks<- I'm trying to be nice. At one point, he came back to his car where I was handcuffed and asked if there were any more. "Did you check behind the rear seat?" was my response. He pulled me over for not slowing down enough when I passed him. I had only slowed from 60 to 40. He thought I could have slowed an additional 5. (So you want to know why people HATE cops.)

I drive a bland vehicle. One which does not have any bling or attraction to thieves. In spite of this I never leave the gun in the car. I rather leave it at home than disarm inside a large parking area downtown for all to see.

I carry weapons to and from the range in the trunk. The ammo in the passenger compartment. That way LEO's can stay ho-hum and no one needs to get too excited.
