Clearly, it's going to be tough to get a clear winner when talking about mass produced 1911's. In all honesty, my best recommendation would be to wait, save some more money and get a proper 1911 from Wilson Combat, Volkmann Precision, Les Baer, Nighthawk Custom, or Guncrafter Industries.

I LOL'd.

OP, I was in a similar conundrum last year looking to spend a little over $1000 on a 1911. I looked at a bunch of guns from the makers you're looking at (and several more) and came to the same conclusion you did: Save up and get a nicer one. I bought a Dan Wesson, and have been really pleased with it. If you get that Specialist, you'll be glad you did.

Yeah, but this was not in the OP's original post. Only four 1911's were listed which means he was not considering a high end 1911. Frankly, I am not convinced that spending $1800+ on a handgun is the best use of resources.

My Sig has the traditional slide.

Only four models have the traditional slide. He did not include one of those models.

$1800 is peanuts in 1911 land. There's plenty of Colts, Kimbers, and Springfields creeping up into that range that don't hold a candle to the current DW's.

If you can't swing it and get the DW, look at the Colt rail gun. But the DW is really worth it.

Kimber revolutionized CNC and MIM to spit out something to compete with Colt.

Dan Wesson has stepped up the CNC game to make an assembly line of pistols that are closer to Ed Brown quality than anything else. And no cheap parts. It's extraordinary for the price. The thumb safety is really the only part I truly feel the need to further customize.

Just curious, but is there any particular reason the OP didn't include the Colt Rail Gun? I've never owned one, but have shot a couple and found them to be as solid as any Kimber or Springfield. I've excluded Sig and S&W because I really don't have any trigger time with them sufficient to compare them.
The Colt rail gun got this whole thing started for me a few weeks ago. I saw and handled one for sale and thought (I need a single stack 1911) the colt I was handling was a stainless version and a real nice gun. The slide to frame fitment left a lot to be desired thou. So at first my thoughts were a single stack with all the above mentioned for around $1200 and now we all are having this discussing trying to help me out.

Ok, so the big news is today I ordered the Dan Wesson Specialist in black. It was a hard choice for me, I really kept going back and forth between it, the LW operator and wanting to give Kimber my own personal shake down. When it came down to it I couldn't find anything bad on the DW and I've seen a few with really high round counts that look almost new. That, the quality, and a lot of preaching from y'all and friends led me to get it. As stated before I'm very hard on guns and the DW won me on its toughness.

So the DW is paid for. There is also a LW operator coming in at the same time that I'm going to look over and try to talk my wife into for a Wedding Anniversary Present!

Somewhere on the first page somebody was saying something about the quality of Sigs 1911 parts not being up to par with the other brands. From my experience and research I have seen, the Sigs have a match grade barrel, bushing, trigger and also have all bar stock parts. Supposeddly no cast ot mim at all and the slide to frame fit is done by hand. Correct me if I'm wrong.
That hasn't been true for a long time. Sigs use plenty of MIM, and Exeter/Newington under Ron Cohen has sourced some particularly low-quality stuff (from the likes of Indo-MIM). "Match-grade barrel" is often marketing fluff, and it most definitely is in this case. I find the Sig 1911s completely unimpressive.

Hope your DW experience is more favorable than mine.

Fanboys..yeah, DW puts Glock to shame. Want to get banned from 1911.com? Just say anything negative about a DW.

Performance, warranty, or backing up the claims...not so much.

Infidel, as the old joke goes: "who you gonna please with that thing?" Nobody, but you. Enjoy.

For a good ride in stainless, look at the Smith & Wesson sku 108284. May have to upgrade the sights.

I'm late to this thread, I was going to suggest a Springfield MC Operator if you're not going to be carrying it but the DW is an excellent choice, it'll serve you well.

Bias polling ...

Got in late but, ... given the models listed in the poll, "none of the above" is the only correct answer. :scrutiny:

For the rather simple reason that the pollster omitted the best .45acp "rail gun" currently being made:

Colt MARSOC M45A1
CRG-3.jpg

If it's good enough for what the Marines are tasked to do, then it's good enough for anything you'll encounter that requires a .45-projectile solution ... or several. ;)

I know this thread is dated but hope you are still pleased with your purchase. I ordered a Dan Wesson Valor yesterday and used this thread to help in my decision making process (should be in my hands next week). I feel I have made the right choice, never held one thus never shot one either, just going by recommendations by others. This has been a very informative thread with a great amount of expert advise offered. Thanks to all who contributed, really had a influence on my decision (no intention to hi-jack, just offer thanks).
