So i've been checking out the .40S&W caliber.
I'm looking the one with polygonal rifling, accurate, reliable and full size. if you have a 40, which one do you have? it should be less than $550. i looked for the XD but nobody seems to have it available.

I own the Glock-23 in 40 S & W. The Glock-22 would be the full size model. Never had any problem with the gun. The serial number is not part of the "defective rail list." I really like the G-23 and the 40 S & W. It is my favorite semi-auto pistol that I own, and the most fun for me to shoot. Last that I knew, Galyan's had them for 499.00 + tax. That's about the best price that I've seen retail in MI. Shop around, you may find a better price.

Tropical Z mentioned the CZ line. I own a CZ-97B in .45 acp and a friend of mine has the CZ-75B in 9mm. Both of us are very happy with them. CZ is a fine gun line to consider too.

Another vote for the Glock 23. That's the first handgun I ever bought (by God's divine guidance) back when I was clueless about handguns. I've loved it ever since. It's comfortable to shoot, easy to carry, and give you 10+1 (13+1 w/ normal mags) in a nice slim package. I'm not sure how big you are. If you have large hands you might prefer the full-size Glock 22. I'm 6'0" and 145 pounds and the Glock 23 fits me like it was custom made. My $2*10^-2...

Greeting's All-

I had three .40 caliber handgun's; Sig-Sauer P229,
and Glock's 23 and 27. Of all three, the Glock 27
was the one that I shot the best; and felt the most
comfortable with. However, I decided that I'm just not
a .40 caliber fan; returning instead to my first love, the
.45 ACP! :uhoh:

you owe it to yourself to check out the H&K USP .40. in my opinion, it is the easiest shooting .40 i've tried. i have/use/carry a .40 compact and couldn't be happier. it has all the features you listed including the polygonal rifling. plus you can have an array of configurations if you want. hi-caps are out there for them too, although a little spendy. try one out, they're addicting.

I do have an HK, not the .40 but it's the USP 45. the USP 40 is a little too much, although the USP 45 I have is very accurate.
i have no doubt about the USP 40, it's just that my wallet doubts about it's ability to shoot benjamins for another USP :)

I prefer large gun because it's easier to control for me, never really like smaller compact handguns. it seems that XD 40, Glock 22, baby eagle 40 fullsize, the EAA Witness 40 and the CZ. does the CZ have polygonal rifling?
how about pictures of your 40? :)

I dabbled w/ the 40...had a Para P16, a Glock 23, a USPc 40, & a Beretta 96. Of the bunch, I liked the Beretta the most. That said, I stopped dabbling & sold them all off. I too am not a fan of th 40 S&W

I have a Ruger P94 in .40 caliber, and I've enjoyed that. But ever since I got my Springfield XD-9 I've been looking for an XD-40. Isn't it funny? Some places have XD-40's and some places (like here) they're very scarce. My son bought an XD-40, and called and told me there was another one for sale. By the time I got to the place a couple of hours later, it was gone.

A few days ago, I did find another place that had one, but they wanted $50 more for it than my son had paid. I thought about it overnight, but it was sold the next day.

Anyway, my vote is for an XD-40, when you can get one!

First off, I always recommend going with .40 pistols that are engineered for the caliber, rather than 9mms reverse engineered for .40. I really don't trust the Glock .40s (case head failures), P99s and Beretta 96s for this reason. On the flip side, dedicated .40 platforms seem to be more accurate.

You have also made a polygonal requirement. While getting more common, this type of barrel is still rare. Choices that fit:

HK USP40 Fullsize. One of the most accurate .40s. Used prices on this particular model can be excellent. Check out KYImports.com and CDNN for starts. Polygonal.

Desert Eagle Baby Eagle. A solid all steel design loosely based on the CZ75. Originally built for the .41 AE cartridge, it is more than up to .40 standards. Cheap, with Israeli polygonal barrel.

Otherwise, the Sig 229 or 226 are great pistols, but out of your price range, and not polygonal.

My 40S&W preferences are just about the same as my 9mm preferences... CA75B SA as my first choice, standard CZ75s as my second choice then after that, pretty much whichever poly guns you like. The P99 is very comfortable in my hand and the G23 isn't bad but the 40S&W in the Glock still has that stigma for many folks. Never shot a 40 cal Beretta or Taurus but think that if I had to carry a 40, not concealed, I would look pretty strongly at something like the Beretta Brigadier though they are about $50 to $100 over your budget.

my best shooting (the one i shoot best) .40 is my beretta 96 (just the plain one) which has outshot my sig 229 and glock 22. less snappy recoil and smoother running...plus i like the longer slide.

i paid less than your price ceiling for mine and see LE trade-ins locally for <500 quite alot.

if you are looking for somthing new, i'd go with the CZ or the EAA clone

My vote goes to the Browning High-Power in .40. Second choice is the Glock 22.
The High Power just feels great in the hand, shoots well and is accurate
Its a great gun.

Well atleast one person said the 99 series in this thread. I love my sw99 in .40s&w. I thought i didnt till i got to shoot it indoors and a little more controled. Man im good with it. Plus the p99/sw99 is a heck of a complete deal for what you get. Customizable grip with the backstraps, comes with interchangable front posts(wich you can do yourself) to change for different load characteristics, windage adjustable sights, great ergonomics i think.

the xd's are fine pistols from what ive heard, i dont like no decocker but thats just me...or i toltaly over looked the decocker if it has one. i dont like glocks....just my opinion. cz's are fine pistols will do you right.

there is always hi-point :scrutiny: :D

I also have the Glock 23. I really like this gun. Very accurate, small, but easilly controled package. Unlike some of these other guys, I have small hands and the compacts tend to fit me better. Hold a bunch of the above mentioned guns and see which one you feel most confortable with. All are great.

I just traded for another NIB Glock 23 last week. I wanted another 23C but this was all the dealer had. It listed for $489. This was at Bullseye in Lawrenceville GA (you Atlanta area shooters should check them out. Pretty good prices.). The most accurate stock 40cal that I have owned was a CZ75B SA. THe most accurate custom 40 was a BHP built by Alpha Precision. Its now owned by another member here.

I have and am very impressed w/ the CZ 40B.
Very accurate and reliable.
Fits MY hand very well and I personally like a 'hammer' style as opposed to a 'striker' style (just personal preference).
(However, I also like the feel of the HS-2000; umm - XD)

This is an alloy double stack .40 w/ a 1911 angle grip.
It DOES NOT have polygonal rifling however.

Picked mine up for $275.00 + tax @ local shop ($400.00 gun at least IMHO)
Only change I would rec. is to install 18# recoil spring.

is it true that CZ only gives 5 year warranty instead of lifetime?
i went to a gun store today, i saw the glock 22 for $559, found an xd40 for $470 and saw the taurus pt140 stainless for $400.
the finish is nicer on the xd40 than on the glock with much better ergonomics. the taurus is a compact one, quite interesting.
that certainly helps to narrow the choices down.

bowlcut, speaking of hi-point, that shop is selling a .38 hi point for $99 for every purchase of any gun in their shop :)

Handy, i thought i saw the XD has polygonal rifling? if you mean the CZ, well, nobody has it here, so i can't say for sure. i'm in DPRK, so prices are higher and not too many selection. that gun store seems to be very well stocked in glocks!

The only recent CZ with polygonal rifling was the CZ 83 in 9mm MAK (no longer imported). All the other CZs currently being imported are conventional rifling.

As for the CZ 40B, it is no longer being imported, either. AIM Surplus currently has it for $299.95 with 2 mags and CDNN has one for $279.95 with one mag: the second mag is available for $29.95.

Of my three .40 cal. CZs, the CZ 75B is the most accurate, closely followed by the CZ 100. The CZ 40B is a very close third.

Gudel,

The XD does not have polygonal rifling. If it does, Springfield is trying to keep it a secret.

There is nothing wrong with the Glocks. I've shot alot of different brands and weights in mine and have never seen any sign of case head failure. The same holds true of everyone else I know with a Glock 40 either issued or personal purchase.

My favorite though is the SIG 239 in 40, its a great little gun.

I've shot the following .40's
Beretta 96 Centurian
Sig 239
Sig 229
Sig226
Sig Pro 2340
Glock 22, & 23
Glock 24C
HK USP Compact .40
CZ 75 SA .40

Out of them all the Sig 226, followed closely by the 229, handle the round the best. Controllability of the gun shooting the .40 was best accomplished by the 226 and 229. They were also some of the most accurate .40's I've ever fired. The SigPro was like shooting a 229 with a slightly higher bore axis. It is a very underrated pistol. With the Glocks, granted they do have the polygonal rifling, I thought the recoil management was the worst of the bunch. I also found it very hard to transition to the Glock type trigger. Having said that, the MOST ACCURATE & CONTROLABLE .40 I've ever fired is the Glock 24C. This is the one with the 6inch barrel and ported. I was amazed at how easy this gun was to shoot. At 15 yards, I was doing roughly 3/4" groups with this gun. They are tough to find, but they are exceedingly accurate pistols. The Sig 239 is the best bet in a concealable .40 that I've come across. Surprisingly, the CZ75B SA in .40 shoots like a dream. It is EXTREMELY accurate, and recoil management is right there with the 229. 2 things with the CZ, 1.) It has failure to extract issues with Winchester White Box and 2.) I've read about instances of the polymer trigger breaking on CZ Forum. I would like to try a fullsize HK USP .40, Walther P99 .40, Springfield XD 5"barrel, and the Glock 35.
