I'm considering my first sound suppressor purchase and would like to use either an H&K USP or S&W M&P. I already own both in 9mm so price of the gun is not a factor.

I'd appreciate it if this not turn into a "I like/dislike the H&K/M&P gun itself". I like them both, just want to know if there's a reason I should prefer one over the other for a can. Threaded barrels seem to be readily available for either.

Do you think either is a better choice? If so, I'd appreciate if you could post reasons.

If it matters, I'm leaning towards the Thompson Machine Isis-2 suppressor based on good reviews and favorable price point.

Thanks!

Well, one thing to look at is sights. I know there are sights available to "see" over the can for the USPs. I have no idea about the M&Ps. You might want to check on that.

Beyond that, I would be completely out of my lane to give advice on suppressor related questions. Good luck with your purchase though, and post some pics when you decide.

I think either would be a great suppressor host. That doesn't really matter though, because I'd be willing to bet that you will end up with threaded barrels for both of them eventually. :D As soon as you take possession and start shooting suppressed you'll start looking around the safe seeing what else you can mount it to! :)

You may find the cost of the barrels themselves to be a factor. HK barrels are made from steel mined from the asteroid belt, so they can be quite spendy. ;)

Thanks, I hadn't considered the visibility of the sights over the can!

Great comment on the source of H&K Steel ;-). I did notice a slight :)what:) discrepancy between the price of the H&K barrel vs. the M&P. Still not enough to make me choose one over the other but definitely worth considering all else being equal.

I have heard that USP 9mms are very good suppressed (just about as quiet as a P226 which is supposed to be one of the best). I'll also agree that once you get your can, those threaded barrels will start to multiply, I know mine are, and I'm still waiting on the transfer!

Another thing to look for on the barrel is the availability of thread pitch. Most German guns (at least HK and Sig) are typically threaded in 13.5x1 LH while the American standard for threading is 1/2x28. Thompson Machine uses the Multimount adapter for the Isis, so you can get two mounts, but that's more money (then again, that may be easier than finding a oddly threaded barrel like a 1/2x28 for a 9mm Sig 228...) For what its worth, you may want to drop in at NFAtalk.com, they have some good suppressor tests with legit sound metering equipment. The Isis 1 didn't meter that well (133-138db if I recall) when dry, but I haven't seen any tests on the Isis 2. That said, Brooks over at TM is great to work with. I'm waiting on the transfer of a Poseidon and had a few questions about it, and Brooks was really quick to answer and was very helpful.

No preference. Heckler & Koch, I guess, if I had to pick one.

I voted H&K. In part because there are so many factory videos and the like showing USP's with suppressors. I suspect that H&K designs their guns for suppressor use from the get-go and includes their use in all aspects of testing more than most other vendors. I haven't seen as much coverage of M&P's with suppressors, but to be fair I tend to look more at what's going on with H&K.

I have fired an M&P .45 and a HK45 suppressed, so similar to the OP's choices, but not the exact same. I preferred the HK, it just seemed like it was made to be suppressed. However I will be the first to admit..... I love to shoot anything suppressed, and it is hard for me to like one any significant amount more than another...
