If you can't rent both, then rent the .40. If you are OK with the recoil, that's probably your answer. If you're not, then the 9 is the right piece.
BTW, reloading for the two calibers really should be about the same in cost once you have the brass. I admit to buying factory ammo and then using that brass to reload; that approach is expensive in .40 as opposed to 9 mm. You can, however, buy relatively cheap empty brass for both calibers, keeping your overall costs low whichever caliber you choose.
