Which state: Arizona, Nevada or Utah?

All 3 of these states are extremely gun-friendly in comparison to places I've lived before (and currently live in). I'm looking to move to that region in a few years and would like to begin visiting possible places to purchase a home and get a feel for the land/culture.

Does one of these 3 states stand out as the most friendly towards gun-owners? I'm also talking about the long-term. Which of these states has a lower influx of "liberal" types that are afraid of guns and lack a sense of responsibility for their personal safety?

Do all of these 3 states have state-wide pre-emption, meaning, local counties/towns cannot pass more restrictive laws concerning firearms than the state constitution/legislation outlines?

I am an Asian-American. Would this be an issue in any of these states? I know this can be a delicate subject, so feel free to PM me if you have any personal observations you don't wish to share with the group. (It would be nice to have a somewhat established Asian community, for the sole purpose of obtaining grocery ingredients for what I cook. Though I guess I could always drive to California.)

I am not religious (agnostic). Would this be an issue in any of these states?

I do not plead allegiance to any particular political party, though I identify most closely with Libertarians.

I am currently in the technology/computer field. Are there jobs? I guess I don't necessarily need a typical techie job. I'd be willing to teach technology at a university, or be the one technology guy at a company. That is, work isn't everything to me. I just want to make a decent living and be able to pay the mortgage. In fact, I'd be willing to switch careers altogether, as long as it can afford me the time to enjoy other stuff in life--like be with family, friends, exercise, shoot, hike, fish, etc.

Relatively inexpensive land would be nice (I like space, land-wise, not necessarily building-wise). I just paid too much for a 700 sq. ft. box (condo).

I guess all the other typical gun-stuff applies. Preferably no waiting period, shall-issue CCW, pro-gun peace officers, etc.

Edited to solicit input as far as possible places to check out. I'm looking for someplace that does not snow (or snows infrequently). I prefer mountain and timber over desert and cacti, but am open to both. Would be nice to be centrally located to lots of different climates and terrain.
 
Alaska...thats where you want to be.....

Lots of tech jobs...small population..vigourous Asian communities (Koreans are the largest, followed by Filipino, Lao/Thai/Cambo/Hmong), Chinese and Japanes..

Totally gun friendly, best hunting and fishing in the world...very libertarian..

Problem..lots of snow in some areas...
 
Well, I can speak for Utah on some of the questions.

You probably know the majority of the population is Mormon (at least outside of Salt Lake anyways). However, there are all other religions and non-religions as well. The only thing that I've heard alot of people complain about is how it's not as convenient to get alcohol here. You won't find hard liqour in grocery stores... it's all controlled in State Liquor stores.

Other than that liberal mayor in Salt Lake, Rocky Anderson who won't even let us build a stupid highway through a salty swamp because a couple of birds might miss it :fire: , most of the politicians are very conservative and very Republican.

Out of the three states you mentioned, I think Utah probably has the best opportunities for you there. There are alot of IT jobs here. Although, in the current economy, I do have a few friends that recently were laid off and are having a tough time finding good jobs again.

No waiting period, Shall-Issue, and I run into cool cops at the shooting range all the time.




Things I would probably like about Arizona and (southern) Nevada better: It probably never snows there! Although I do ski here on occasion, winter time usually gets boring to me and I get sick of the cold weather and snow really quick. Summers are great though!
 
So. NV here.

Gaming related and/or construction based will be a first look at work I'd think. All need some form of information management in-house or contract.

You've heard about the Clark County Reg for registration of all concealable firearms... if its a factor to you. Outside of Clark Co. the sheriff's don't seem to care.

Fed Gov't owns 80% of the land, so you're pretty much on your own out of town.

I've lived here for only 25 years and dream about So. UT or No. AZ for my next 25.

We're going thru some CA type tax issues with our state economy costing more than the taxes bring in.

Gore carried Clark Co. Bush, the rest of the state FWIW

Can snow and be quite cold up north and in the higher elevation places to live. Hot and dry (nice) the rest of the time.

Lots of Californians moving in, naturally... both here and up in Reno/Carson City, so expect the rest of the luggage to follow.

Used to be a 15 minute trip across town-type of western city, cowboy hats, horses, "City Limits" and "out in the County", if you know what I mean.

I guess thats what I'm still looking for.

I think AZ is going to change in the next ten years and none of it for the better.Too many liberals from CA and the east cost moving in and they are taking over the local goverments.The gun laws are going to get more restictive and goverment control much worse.Allready happening and going to get much worse.Lots of people born in AZ allready moving out to points north.The worse the weather the less chance of liberals moving in.
I think is going to happen all over the conservative western states just happening here faster then most.

My brother lived in Utah during the 80's. The prices of real estate have really gone up since then, almost like they did in California. I don't know why. You have a land locked state and an overly educated population for the jobs available there. I think alot of California Mormons sold out and retired there and drove the real estate prices to unsustainable highs. I don't know if that is true in Arizona or Nevada. Las Vegas has probably seen it's share of inflation.

If I had to choose from the three, I would live in Utah. It is a really beautiful state. IMHO, more so than your other 2 choices. There are some nice areas in Arizona but alot of desert too. I think there are also more techy types of jobs in Utah if that's your goal. Thye Mormons pretty much run that state. They founded it and carved it out of the desert. I had a nephew who went to college there. He made his own beer! Otherwise, you have the state run liquor stores. This is not that much different than many places in the SouthEast for that matter. Here in KY, you can't buy beer, wine or hard stuff on Sundays in most counties. In some, you can't buy it at all because they are "dry" counties. In some you can buy beer on Sunday but nothing else. Same with Tennessee and Alabama and I bet Georgia too. So, if you like to drink, there are far worse places that Utah.
 
Utah is a great place to live. But by your criteria it does have some downsides, there are not a lot of jobs right now. Utah has a small population of very educated people, so when the economy is bad, there is a ton of competition. Real estatate values are too high all along the Wasatch front. (Ogden-SLC-Provo).

If you go out into the rural counties real estate is super cheap, however there are no jobs.

And it does snow here. Usually a lot, but not this year.

80% of the state is Mormon. Personally I like that, but I'm biased. :p
 
If you goto Utah, talk to atc1man. he runs a local mailing list, so you can BS and find people to shoot with.

I left Utah last summer, it has good and bad points. Except for the increase in religious people, I personally perfer the rural area's over the wasatch front
