I have a dilemma on my hands, and can't make up my mind. I currently own two very effective combat handguns. I have a ccw license and carry whenever in public with my family. I own a steyr m40-a1, and a Colt goverment model 1991-a1, in stainless. I can't afford to keep both, much as I would like to.

The steyr is flawless with any ammo I put through it. I got it new, and have put around 500 down the pipe. It is more accurate than I am, and easy to conceal.

The colt I bought used. It appears to have been used little, and not abused. It has only failed to feed once in 100 shots, and this was a magazine issue, easily cleared. It is harder to conceal, at least on a kydex OWB holster. Maybe that will get easier as winter come on.

Both guns feel great in my freakishly large hands, and I am comfortable with the manual of arms for both. I am a longtime shooter for around twenty years, and have little care for the plastic vs. steel issue.

I am trusting the last defense of my family to these tools, and really need a little rational thought from the experienced.

Oh, yeah, if it matters, I shoot 100-200 rounds per month at the range, and have a BUG, a Keltec p-11, but I dont' trust it entirely because of multiple jams. But, it's fairly new, so break-in is warranted.

Thanks so much in advance, I really appreciate the help.

The reason we carry is to protect ourselves. The best way to do that is to hit exactly where you aim if needed. Since you said you are most accurate with the Steyr and it has been totally reliable the choice should be obvious.

BTW, the P-11 shouldn't fail, break in or not. Try and find the right ammo for your P-11. I have a P-32 and have had no failures since I bought it almost two years ago. I shoot only Fiocchi FMJ for practice and Fiocchi SJHP or Winchester Silvertip for SD.

As much as it pains me to say it I would recommend you keep the Steyr. You have 500 trouble free rounds through it and it is easier for you to conceal. One thing you didn't mention is that if you're tight for cash the Colt will definitely get you more money in a sale.

So... how much? ;)

I think that is the one you need to get rid of! Why have a gun for self defense that you don't trust and is not reliable? Dump the Kel-Tec and find a better pistol that you can conceal. Maybe you will find something that you like better than all three? Based on my experience with Kel-Tec, I wouldn't trust it either.

I would look for a compact that will serve all you needs. Try a Glock 19 or 26 9mm. Or look at other makers. I would first get rid of the Kel-Tec before I even thought about ditching either the Colt or the Steyr. Why get rid of a gun that works and keep one that doesn't?

Maybe Comprimise

Break-in, shamk-in..

If you have ANY room to compromise, keep the 2 guns that you CCW, and get rid of the loser gun. It's telling you something, right out of the box..

Think of it this way, what would you carry CCW, for "your 24/7 protection" IF the CCW gun you keep, needs to be fixed/repaired, "out of service", until such a time up the road, when you get it back, test it, and verify it is "dependable again"?

Nope, if it were me, and there is any room here for compromise, I would keep the 2 that I know, CCW, work, and are reliable, and sell the loser, and keep the better "back up gun" for what it is.. Your trusted friend.
