Hello all! Those of you that carry the Ruger SP101, I’m curious as to what kind of leather you use. I’ve looked around and it seems that most quality holsters leave the trigger completely exposed. I know it’s a hard SA trigger but none the less I’d like for it to be covered.
I’m particularly interested in IWB holsters for a 3in. SP101.
Thanks for your input. All the best!

I carry an active pro gear iwb tuckable j hook. I too have a 3" model and the holster options for sp101 3" are slim and none. I've actually thought about doing "range report" on how my holster has been (seeing as how it's not a household company name). It's been a good holster and does cover the trigger. It also conceals well when tucked. I thought I'd give it a go as I don't have the cash flow for most rigs out there. If I have time next week I'll try to post some pics.

I've been using an Uncle Mike's cheapie IWB, size 8 I think, for my SP101, .357, 2 1/4", while I contemplate the same leather question. The Uncle Mikes does cover the trigger completely, but doesn't extend up to cover the hammer. When worn over a T-shirt and under and overshirt it's plenty comfortable, but leather with a sweatshield would be more comfy when worn against the skin tucked under a T or polo. I have decent belts, so comfortable load bearing for the day isn't an issue, and my rush to spend $ on a good holster is growing less and less urgent from a comfort perspective.

I don't think the Uncle Mikes holds it firm enough, though, so I need a better long term solution. I'd rather not have to find a secluded place every few hours to readjust position and ensure it's not sliding up and over the beltline. Dropping it due to a loose holster would lose a ton of cool points and possibly create trouble.

I carry a 3.06" SP101 in a Don Hume OWB holster. If I recall, it's a model 721.
This holster covers most of the trigger guard. The trigger itself is fully covered. There's also a retention strap that goes over the hammer.
I also have a Don Hume IWB holster (can't recall the model number) that clips over the trousers. It covers the trigger guard completely but has no retention strap.
Don Hume makes a nice quality leather holster that won't break the bank...figure about $65 for the 721 (which includes shipping).

I use a Milt Sparks VM2 for my SP101. It only took six months to arrive after I ordered it. It was worth the wait, but I'm not sure what to suggest while you wait.

In a tight fitting leather or kydex holster the cylinder can't turn, so it doesn't really matter if the trigger is covered or not. Likewise, if there is a strap over the hammer the trigger doesn't need to be covered.

My SP101 is 2.25" and I use the Bianchi 3S for the IWB and the 7/7L, "L" stands for lined and mine is lined for the OWB. Check them out.

Uncle Mikes IWB for mine

I usually carry my Colt detective IWB, but I have also on many occasions carried the SP101 IWB .

I have a iwb bianchi with thumb snap i wear behind the back.i also had a "beltster" made for cross draw.very comfortable but imprint a little more noticeable.

Galco for me.........

I carry my SP101 in a black Galco leather, open-top, high-ride pancake OWB holster.It's a model "SM122B"
I have another in natural just like it but bigger, that fits my GP100 3".
I'm not sure of the Model.
Oh, I also carry the GP100 in a Simply Rugged Sourdough pancake holster.

My favorite holster for SP101 is Blackhawk IWB for S&W J-frame (link). They don't market it for SP101 but the gun fits perfectly in this holster. It's a well made leather duty holster with adjusable cant, tension screw and open muzzle. I can post a picture if you are interested.

Don Hume H721OT
Snugs up tight OWB and with the right shirt stays hidden surprisingly well.
I walked around a whole day in front of my family in shorts and a dark t-shirt and they never knew. Covers the trigger well, but has an open top, no strap but does not seem to be an issue, fits very snug, 3 1/16 barrel protrudes out the bottom maybe a 1/2 in

I'm not currently carrying my SP101 right now as I'm using my S&W 340 M&P in a pocket holster as its VERY hot in Florida right now. However I plan on ordering a Ken Null Gibraltar speed scabbard pancake holster for my SP101 and well as one of his vampire cross draw rigs for the 340 M&P. Ken make top notch stuff you should give his holsters a serious look for carrying your SP101. My SP101 is a 2/2.5in" model by the way.

I used a pair of Galco Concealables, then went to a pair of Milt Sparks PMK holsters. Both cover the trigger guard. The Galcos were instant gratification, but the PMKs have a better draw angle for me.
