The original AK-74 magazines were colored to distinguish them for AKM magazines. Recall that AKMs and AK-74 were both in use at the same time, and both rifle and magazines are virtually identical. The AK-74 also has a groove in the butt, and of course the muzzle brake to further distinguish the rifles
