Why I choose not to be a member of the NRA.

About ten years ago, in Washington state, the anti gun folks were able to get their Initiative 676 on the state ballot. Had it passed, gun owners in WA would have had restrictions placed on our gun rights that would have been the Bradys' dream come true. The NRA spent well over a million dollars and hundreds of hours to help us get organized and finally shoot 676 down in flames. Having been actively involved in that fight, I had the opportunity to watch, first hand, the fine work done for gun rights by the NRA. I'm convinced that had we not had their support, Washington state would now have the same sort of stupid gun laws as those inflicted on the citizens of California, Massachusetts and New Jersey. I wish that those of you on this site who are too misinformed, or just plain cheap, to support the NRA could have seen what I saw. Bye the way, the Second Amendment Foundation was there to help too, but only the NRA had the money, the organization and the clout to defeat Initiative 676.

CHARLTON HESTON: We're in favor of the Brady Bill as it stands now. To a large extent, we drew it up in its current form.
SAM DONALDSON: Mr. Heston, the NRA opposed the Brady Bill.
COKIE ROBERTS: At the time.
HESTON: No, we supported the Brady...
DONALDSON: Once it was passed...
HESTON: We opposed it at the beginning and we were a large factor in the language of the bill.

TIM RUSSERT: Do you support -- on your Internet it says trigger lock legislation is an invasion of privacy. It says you're against it.
LAPIERRE: No, we have always supported safety locks. We're supporting the bill on Capitol Hill right now that provides mandatory...
RUSSERT: In states throughout the country?
LAPIERRE: Mandatory safety locks with the sale of every gun, instant checks on gun shows done with a 24-hour delay, and violent juveniles prohibited from owning guns.

We may still be living with the effects of those decisions but all the things you just referenced happened 40+ years ago. Many things have changed since then; including the NRA

Edit: except for the trigger lock quote; which is obviously more recent.
