Back in '09 ....[tm]
I have been a big proponent of slugs in 28 ga for a l-o-n- g time. Many a critter has fallen to a .54 cal chunk of lead. Many still do.
I ruined many a 28 ga bbl in testing my slugs and buckshot loads.
I have a reason for wanting this. It is well known here I hate the definition of Tactical of today. I do believe in methods for a task. I believe in function and reliability.
To many lead chunks proved and continue to prove their worth. I was concerned about Gun Control and confiscations - still am. I look at a lever action carbines in 30-30 , handy easy to carry, easy to kept fed and Politically correct.
Even "Back in '09 , when I was doing , what I was , more and more hunting areas had gone to shotgun only . Too many kids learn shotguns WRONG - handed a .410 , and with the patterns , can't hit. / can't learn skills as well as should. Then they are handed a .410 to deer hunt.
I taught many a kid, or petite female with a 28 ga , this ga is better than it it suposed to be . We have discussed this numerous times already. Before Non toxic shot was mandated for waterfowl - Yes it is true Bing Crosby was a duck hunter, and a great shotgunner, as were many of his closest friends . If invited to shoot ducks with them - you shot a 28ga . Nothing larger was alllowed.
There is a direct co relation to pediatrics and geriatrics, from shotguns to digestive sytems. That older person , male or female, can't take the recoil of a sharp 20 for small game, much less slugs for deer. Arthritis kicks in and it flat hurts to try to hqandle a 7 lb 12 or 20 ga to defend the home. Be it a BG or varmit , rabid dog, maybe a bear.
A 28 ga is ~ 5 1/2 - 6 1/2 lbs in weight. Easy to tote, not only weight but ergonomically .
So a person is bird hunting with a 28 ga, be nice to have a buckshot for a rabid dog attacking his bird dog. 28 ga slug for that Buck that pops out the tree line, and you still have deer tag to fill.
Be it a single shot , O/U, SxS, Pump or semi 28 ga and the BG is in the house and the Arthritis is giving you fits....or maybe that 10 yr old grandaughter defends Grandma & Grandpa....with a PC gun .
Hypothectic Newpaper Item - or Not ? " 10 yr old shoots BG with Bird gun .... Police say the deceased was a convicted murderer...".
I dunno - for too many years too many folks defended themselves, put food on the table and such with .54 cal chunks of lead and smaller, some even fired pellets from these bore sizes . Oh my, they still do - See the BP forum , Gary and others have stories to tell.
There was a time before black synthetics, fancy sights, add on lights, and super cool ammo names....still is.
Tip : don't discount #4 buck with a tad of farina.
