Well this would be our first gun, so Im a newb at this. On the paperwork it says she got a p229 SAS. I looked that gun up and it has a wood grip. I asked her, and she said the one she got is all black with silver up top. No wood, so Im assuming its a two tone? Can someone give me some insite on how many different kinds of p229s there are, and are there price differences? I belive this one was 899. Do they make a SAS with a black grip? Im just trying to figure out if they took advantage of a novice woman buying a gun. Thanks for the help

899 seems like a good price for a 229 SAS. I have seen them go for a little over a thousand before. I cant tell you anything on the grips though. Thats a hell of a handgun for your first one. Sigs are known to be excellent handguns used by many police departments, the Secret Service, and the Navy Seals. What caliber is it?

Also welcome to THR.

She got a 40. What are the differences in the SAS, and the other ones? Is it mechanical, or just the color combo? Im not getting one, we will have to share. Thanks for the replies.

Im assuming its new, the guy told her it was. I will go with her when she picks it up and ask some questions. I personally like the black better..... But if I can get some money back for the non wood handle, I will try. Is the wood handle the only difference in the regular and the SAS? I really dont understand why SAS would be stamped on the side, and stainless is stamped on the other ones, if there were no real differences. Can you look a serial number like a VIN on a car to get a correct model? Thanks for the info!
***OK I caught the edit.... Can you explain the dehorning?

SAS I believe has more rounded corners on the slide makeing it an easier gun to carry. Less snags, may conceal better. Do a Goggle search for Sig Arms, click on thier home site, look under products, and compare the different guns yourself. Then you will know what the differences are and can ask and get the answers you're looking for.. Sigs are pricey, but also a VERY good choice. You maybe getting a price break now for not haveing the wood grips on the SAS.
Be safe.

That is a nice gun. I dont how big her hands are but the grip of the 229 is fat (to me anyway) with wood grips. So if it feels too big be sure to get a set of the Sig factory plastic grips. That will slim it up. Then again there may be no issues. But having owned several 229s that is just my take. regardless its a sweet gun.

Dehorning means removing sharp edges.
The SAS has a rounded trigger guard compared to the other 229's.
This gun is primarily designed for concealed carry.
Yes, I prefer the black grip panels as well and I think they're a little lighter than wood.
My 229 has been perfect. It's a .40S&W but with a barrel change you can easily convert it to .357 SIG.
Your SAS apparently comes with a Lifetime Warranty...nice.

Thank you guys for all of the help. Im sure im going to have more questions after we pick it up. :)

Update

I called SigArms customer service this morning and they said that the SAS now comes with black polymer grips. This change has happened in the last couple of months due to supply issues with the walnut grips.
So please disregard my earlier comment of someone switching grips.
Sig should really change their website to reflect this.
Sigs phone is 603-772-2302 I would ask them to send me a pair of wood grips like their website depicts...the worst they can say is no.

As posted above, SiG has shipped some SAS models with the standard black plastic grips when they are out-of-stock on the wood grips. If you contact SiG, you should be able to get them to send you a set of the wood grips.

The wood grips are thicker than the plastic which your wife may not like if she has smaller hands. Also, the checkering is only on the lower portion of the wood, upper part of the grip is smooth wood, which some people thinks make it harder to grip the gun. Either way, get the wood grips from SiG, even if you never use them, since they add to the value of the gun if you decide to resell it.

Welcome to the SiG owner family!

Whaaaaaaat?!?!? If that's true, they should drop the price on the gun, otherwise Sig owes you those grips. They add a bit to the price of the gun, and the price you paid sounds to be full price (I'm a Sig dealer) If you dont like the wood grips, try to get 'em anyway, and sell them. You should be able to get $40-$60 for them. All SAS pistols previously came with the wood grips installed, and the black polymer grips in the box.

Also, SAS stands for Sig Anti Snag, which is the dehorning process previously mentioned.

Oh, and FWIW, I'm waiting on a couple guns from Sig that have wood grips--they told me that the grips are coming in early august, and guns shipping mid-august. The SAS grips may be part of that shipment. They are working on bringing the wood grip manufacturing in-house.

Congrats on the new gun, and your wife has great taste

Welcome to the Family

We've got a rather large and active Sig community and we don't hide in the woodwork like the cz fellas :neener: so Welcome!

As to your wife and the .40 if the grip felt good to her, she should be fine. My wife prefers my 239 because it's a little slimmer, but my 229 she could shoot just fine.

After you have a chance to break it in (search break in period if you don't already know) I truly believe that it's the break in that tells you everything you need/want to know about how that gun fits you. If the gun fits your wife (I'm assuming it does since she picked it out) I don't forsee you having any issues unless your 6 foot 9 and have hands the size of basketballs.

I'm definitely going to ask about the grips.... I'm hoping there wasn't a swap somewhere along the lines. Especially if some came with both pairs in the box. I'm sure you guys have heard of what happens to women in the car dealerships ;)I tried to look up "break in period" for the gun, but what I came up with was one guy saying 4-500 rounds, and another thread said 2k rounds. Can one of you guys fill me in on the break in period? Thanks for all the input. :D

I just happen to read about your wife and her new Sig.I have recently shot my friends Sig.He is a dealer direct to sig.I have been impressed with the accurancy.
About the grip situation...if it was me..I would call Sig direct and give them the serial number..(I would not mention you own it)..mention you would like to know when it was made (date)
and how it was equiped.I am 99.99 percent sure they will be able to tell you.Also,....the original grips that it had when it left the Sig Factory.I have have called alot of the manufactors, inquiring on manf.date and how each was equiped.I inquired before I bought most all used guns.(especially collectables,Colts,Brownings, etc.)All were very helpful...hope this idea can help you situation on the grips!

Black that SIG shouldn't need any break in. Just clean it and lightly lube it before you shoot it - they pack them with a little extra oil & grease for shipment.

In addition to dehorning & the wood grips it may or may not have, the SAS pistols have a front night sight as well. Here's a link with some discussion the DAK trigger that's on the SAS guns, and HK's competing LEM trigger - http://www.thehighroad.org/showthread.php?t=242758.

I like the P229 SAS, but those huge wood grips are a turn-off for me. I already use a personally owned P229R DAK as a duty pistol, and was thinking of a back-up/spare when sufficient funds accumulate. Another thing I like about the SAS is the tritium insert is only in the front sight, not the rear.

Well today I got some disapointing news :(
I called SIG, and they informed me that I got a Stainless gun, not a SAS. The dealer made a mistake on the paperwork. It looks like I was charged for the SAS, so I might be getting some money back..... What does the Stainless gun sell for, anyone know? The only black on the gun is the grip. This sucks. I got all setup to enjoy the SAS, and now this..... O well. Hey, the upside is the gun was made on the 28th of june, so I know its new ;)

If it is an ST model, don't be upset - you got a better gun in my opinion. The traditional Sigs come with a stainless slide and annodized alloy frame. So, if you got a stainless steel slide and frame then you are well ahead and a better deal than the Sig Anti Snag model. Just my opinion. The ST versions of all Sigs are hard to come by and you pay the premium for said pistol. Enjoy!

I got my 229SAS almost one year ago to the day. The pistol was supposed to come with wood grips but mine came with the black factory grips. I was told that Sig was having a hard time keeping up with the demand for the wood grips, but I would be receiving mine in a couple of weeks. They were true to their word and my wood grips arrived 2 - 3 weeks later. Sweet gun. ;)
