handle +p loads? Considering a 200 gr. bullet at 900-975 fps as a POSSIBLE close range deer load. Or else stick with a .357-158 HP. Advice please!

Yuppur-45ACP with 5 in. barrel. Ohio hunting regs for deer hunting with a pistol simply require .357 caliber or larger with 5 in. minimum barrel length. Don't know why they consider a 45 a deer gun but then again the 410 with slugs is legal here too! BUT, at close range- around here I've shot more deer at 50 feet or less than I have at 100 yards or more.

I load the 255gr LSWC .45 Colt bullet in my .45 Auto Rim cases to get 860-890 fps - some folks go well over 900 fps - from my 4" 625JM. That should be a decent deer-getter, if you do your part with shot placement. They are hotter than I load my .45 Colt cases for my similar sized 625MG in .45 Colt. Additionally, Speer has made a thin-walled .45 Colt-designed 250gr Gold Dot HP designed for 800+ fps that should also do well from an AR case - and be useful against thin-skinned game (deer). Note - the ACP case may actually have more metal at the base, so it should be as good at least. I like the AR's because you can load them so easily. I use my moonclipped, and detuned, ACP's for plinking.
Remember, the .45 Colt was initially an ~14kpsi round, where the .45 AR/ACP are ~22kpsi. Check with Speer for reloading info and ammo availability. If you don't reload, Georgia Arms, and others, load .45 Auto Rim ammo, too.

I've heard of these revolvers being converted to use .460 Roland, and I know people have used .45 Supers in their 625s.
Mine has been fed 230 grain bullets traveling just under 1000fps for a while now. Never a problem.

Question: Is 45 super ok in these or is this dangerous territory? Anyone know? If super is OK then +p would be a cakewalk.
The was an old Handloader article about running hotter loads through a model 17 or 625. They basically said that if you don't seat the bullet near as far as normal, this reduces pressures so a larger powder charge can be used and stay within rated pressures.
It was recommended to use 45AR cases instead of ACP, because the longer than normal 45ACP loads wouldn't feed in a semi auto nor would they fit in the magazine.
He tried two seating depths and both worked fine. I believe he used a 260 grain JHP. Velocities around 1000 fps were obtained. I thought the shortest seating depth (about 1/8th an inch) was rather too short, but he didn't have any problems with bullets popping out under recoil.
I think if you load them long and push a 250/260 grain bullet to around 950 fps or so with one of the slower 45 ACP powders (like blue dot), you should be fine.
I don't believe that this is abuse of the gun. This is around 45 Colt power levels, and the 625 is just like the 25 but just has a 45 ACP cylinder. The gun frame shouldn't care whether 45 ACP or 45 Colt was being fired from a strength point of view. The gun obviously is rated for the higher pressure of the 45 ACP over the 45 Colt, just don't exceed that to prevent abuse.

Well, the point has been made before. Look at the people shooting 29 and 629's loose with heavy hand loads! The point is get the right gun for the right application. Of course it is all a matter of what a person wants to do to their guns. As most people keyboarding are not shooters but key board wannabees, it will suffice.

The 625 will easily shoot many, many, many commercial +P loads without any harm.
For shooting a deer, however, a 200 gr. would not be the load I'd choose; it lacks sectional density, a key factor in penetration. Assuming you don't handload (if you do, then we can talk 45 AR!), a 230 gr XTP, Gold Dot or other high-quality deep-penetrating JHP would be better than the 200 for deer.
If you have the 357, though, it's probably a better choice--not because of any intrinsic superiority, but because there are a lot more commercial loads appropriate for hunting made in 357 than in 45acp. Again, though, handloading chucks all this right out the window.

I merely asked if it was safe or possible.
Reason: I have a buddy who is a 45 ACP nut. He was thinking of one of these loaded the way I was asking about for woods carry, not planning on shooting it loose with a steady diet of heavy loads.

I'm the buddy Ben's talking about. I'm getting a 625, primarily going to shoot it with regular .45, but thought that I could convert it to .460 Rowland for periodic woods and camping use.

It is not to say that it can not be done, but to me why abuse a gun! I know Clark does the 460 Rowland Conversion. I just voice my thoughts that why beat a gun up with 45 Super rounds, what ever floats a person's boat. It is their money and gun.

I understand the difference between use and abuse. But sometimes use heavily comes into play. Just nice to know you "can" if "pushed".

Well, sort of. What's everyones thoughts(I hope I don't start another squabble)of the 45 ACP as a close range(50 yds max)deer round. 200 HP at 950 fps?
I have a 625 that I use for IDPA matches .. 4" barrel .. and I am going to use it this year for a little deer hunting. I am thinking 230gr xtp +p. Yes I have better tools, but this is the one I want to use. I just plan on keeping the distance close.

IF I were going for that combination I would use a hard cast semi-wadcutter, not a HP design. You are going for surgical placement with deep penetration here, not expansion.
Within your effective range it will take a deer easily with proper shot placement. However here in Utah that particular combo is not legal due to our game laws, your state may be different, make sure you check a proclamation.
