Will a 7.62x54R reamer clean up a .308 chamber?

Counter sinking the rim to be flush with the breech face should work just fine.

The counter-bore goes in the barrel not the breach face.
That is what I meant, but it most definitely isn't what I said.

Thanks to all who have kept the data in this thread accurate.... As proven above I couldn't do it myself even when I knew what I meant.

About the only sensible cartridge for re-chambering a shot out .308 barrel to is .30-06 improved. It will clean out the chamber completely, and take the worst of the barrel erosion out too.

No extractor problems, no difference in head size and it will take factory .30-06 ammo. Just check that the thick section of the barrel continues far enough forward to give adequate wall thickness for the full length of the new chamber.

Alpacca - The .30-06 comes in every shape and size... so to see one in a break action will be normal. On the other hand the 7.62x54R pretty much is only used in 1-2 different rifles, which is one of the reasons I like it for this application.... it's different.

scythefwd- Although I have no idea why you would have need of an extremly loud single shot rechambered to a less effective round. I am very curious as to how it turns out and the details of your experiment once finished. Please post pics and details once its done (morbid curiosity). Good luck and I hope it works out for you.

Sorry to pop your balloon, but not only is X54 hotter than .308, but can be handloaded hotter than '/06...

Clipper - from what I can see in my load data, it's about halfway between the two. Then again, cutting the barrel down to 17" will probably more than make up for the advantage in speed. I suspect I'll lose a couple of hundred feet per second compared to the 24" .308 barrel it starts out as. Still not sure if I'm gonna do this or not, but I really like the idea of it. Time to start finding smiths who can do it around here and getting costs. A new barrel will run me 250-300, cut and recrown - 50ish , rechamber - ????? 100-150 sound bout right?? Bellm integrated muzzle brake..... ?????????????? It would be cheaper to just buy a new rifle but I like having something unique... and this would most definitely be that.
