I am looking at getting a Winchester 70 in 30-06. I like the Featherweight and SS Extreme models. I am torn between the two. If you own a SS Extreme - how do like it? Is it accurate? Any problems?

I have one in 308. The rifle is accurate enough. Very close to MOA, but I've not found the right combination of loads yet to consistently get under 1", at least not at this time. I think I will get there. The trigger is good and it feeds and ejects perfectly.

Basically I love the rifle, hate the stock. The Bell and Carlson stocks they put on them are decent enough, but the aluminum bedding blocks add a lot of weight. It will be replaced with a McMillan before next hunting season and will be 1/2 lb lighter, and based on past experiences will probably be more accurate as well.

I noticed than www.cdnnsports.com is showing the Featherweight in a stainless/walnut for $799. I was planning on going that route when I found this rifle used at a steal. You have to download the catalog to view firearms.

I was curious about something on the "Featherweight" rifles. They seem to be the same weight as the SS Extreme rifles at 6 lbs 12 oz. I am scratching my head.

The Featherweights have a thinner barrel profile. The EW has a thicker barrel that is fluted. In the same stock, they should be about equal in weight. In theory the thicker, fluted barrel should be stiffer and more accurate. In my experience the Featherweight barrel is fine for hunting accuracy.

My EW 308 is listed at 6 lb 12 oz on Winchesters website, but actually weighs 7 lbs even before adding scope and mounts. Mine is 7 3/4 lbs with Talley lightweight mounts and a Leupold 2.5-8X scope.

The extra weight comes from the aluminum block in the synthetic stock. My stock weighs 30 oz. The McMillan stock I am ordering will weigh around 20 oz and will be a stiffer stock, even without an aluminum block.

By next hunting season I should be able to trim her up to 7 lbs including scope and mounts and improve accuracy as well.

I love mine to death. I have the .270 and I like the weight. I will be buying another one this fall in the 30.06. Its by far my favorite rifle and I love the stock. I own several Rem 700s and would go with the winchester extreme weather SS if I could re-do those rem 700 purchases. Great recoil pad, great rust resistance. I painted mine black because it is a tad shiny. Depending on your favorite caliber, I like the heavier weight of a gun as it reduces felt recoil. I would not buy a "light" gun if it were above .270 in caliber, its gonna kick like all hell. Very accurate

I have a Remington 700 Camo synthetic ADL in 30-06 that I am considering selling to help fund this purchase.

The Remington is accurate. I have no complaints there. It points and handles well. It has a good trigger. But, there are several things I don't like about my Remington that I think the Winchester 70 SS Extreme will solve:

1. The finish on the 700 is terrible. It rusts in the gunsafe.
2. The stock is flimsy plastic and cheap.
3. The ejection port is small and slow to load. The carrier tips easily.
4. I want CRF for reliability and extraction (I just replaced my 700 extractor).
5. I don't completely trust the safety.
6. The Remington just feels cheap.

when I set out to by a .270 I first looked at remingtons just because I have many of them. But I had a few things I wanted and would not compromise on. I wanted SS barrel, a free floated barrel, a GOOD quality synthetic stock (not a flimsy plastic one), I wanted the .270 caliber, and I wanted a gun that was not too light in weight. When I looked at remington 700s, I did not find one that fit the criteria I had. The Winchester extreme weather is the only one that did. I think I paid 875 for it at Bass pro.
