I just picked up a used 1978 model 94. The bluing is excellent and the wood is VG. However, the loading port gate is stuck or something. I can't get it to open and I can't load the rifle. Does anyone know how to fix this?

They don't "open".

It's a flat spring.

Just push the bullet tip down on the sucker with your bugger finger and shove them in with your thumb.

BTW: You can't load a 94 with the action open.
The loading gate won't push in unless the action is closed.

PS: You can download an Owners Manual here:

Check the screws on the reciever to see if they are loose. Thighten them all up and see if that helps. I saw a 30-30 one time that had a similar, we tightend up the screws and it worked fine.

Should you be able to push it open with your thumb if the action in the closed position? I havn't tried using a bullet yet but I can't push it back at all with my thumb. I don't see how much difference pushing my thumb against a bullet will make.

I can't push it back at all with my thumb.
It doesn't go back!

Again, It is a flat spring.

With the action closed, push straight in on it, and it will spring in far enough to insert a round in the magazine.

Watch some old westerns, it will be useful on many levels. All kidding aside if you are unsure ask whoever you bought it from or a gunsmith or gun store employee. No sense in having an accident or damaging your new gun.

I owned a Marlin 1894c 357 mag and a Marlin 336 30-30. I am assuming they work the same way. I appreciate the help but I am not a novice. I tried to load a round and can't. If you go pick up one of your lever actions I'll bet my paycheck you can push in the loading port cover with your thumb far enough to load a round. Mine won't budge. Thumb, bullet or whatever. It won't push back, spring back, open, whatever you want to call it.

I had a similar problem with my Win 94 30-30. I took it to the gunsmith, who took it apart, put it back together, and corrected the problem. In my case, the screw holding the gate in place had come loose, which allowed the gate to move back slightly. There are two tiny tabs at the front end of the gate that keep the gate inside the loading hole. When the gate moved back, it allowed the gate to pop out slightly, which resulted in a stuck gate.

It might be as simple as unscrewing the gate spring, making sure the gate is in the right position, and tightening the screw.

yakkingallover: Well I'll be. I've been shooting a Marlin .30-30 for over 15 years now and it never occurred to me to try and unload it like that. Learn something new every day I guess.
