Has anyone ever heard of a Winchester Model 1400? My father has a matched set of 12 and 20 gage that his father bought new in about 1977, and they are both in pretty good shape. Could anyone give me an idea of their worth? BTW, they are NOT for sale, I'm just curious:)

Probably about $250 each on average. In my opinion they were highly underated. I have its Sears & Roebuck twin. The Ted Williams Model 300. It's essentially the same gun. Very smooth on the shoulder and, so far, very dependable. :)

Ditto. A finer auto you can look long and hard to find, but they never sold for that much in the first place and are highly under-rated as guns go. I've been shooting one I bought back about 88, mostly doves, but some duck hunting with heavy loads. It's a reliable shotgun that shoots where I look and ain't too bad to look at, either. I mean, I can't see where it's lacking in the field so long as you can get it done with 2 3/4" loads.

I'd love to find a 20 gauge. The 12 is so light on the shoulder, there's no need for a recoil pad. A 20 would probably be like shooting a .410 in a pump. LOL

I could not even sell my mkII 14000 on Gunbroker for $200 with a slug barrel and ventilated ribbed barrel with a scope. People just don't want them and I have heard people say parts can be hard to find though I've seen all parts on gunbroker. Mine was about that age. I never had a problem with the gun though and the only 3 things that I did not like were:

1) Only 2 3/4" shells
2) Mine only took 3 shells in the mag
3) The receiver is an aluminum alloy not steel so it scratched up easily and just seemed a bit cheap.

I traded mine for a Saiga 12 + money on my end and I am happy. I have a pdf owners manual if you would like PM me your email.

The mag holds 2 rounds, one in the chamber makes it 3 total, all I need and the legal limit for migratory birds, anyway. I rarely get a 3rd shot off, sorta why I like doubles. :D A Saiga would be a fun tacticool range toy, but worthless for bird hunting and that's all I use a shotgun for. I've never had the plug out of my Mossberg 500 since I bought it 20 years ago.

That is what my manual said and what I hear others say but my 1400 definitely took 3 in the tube and required me to put a small wooden dowel in it to plug it to 2. Actually just removed the dowel before I traded it and stuck 3 shells in the tube to make sure because I heard many complain about the 2 shell magazine limit.

Yes the Saiga with a 19" barrel is not a good bird gun but I think it will serve me well for deer (probably scare the deer dead ). I have an 870 ventilated ribbed duck gun.

I think the Saiga might be the ultimate hiking gun in Alaska. :D I don't really have a need for one, not any brownies around here, but it'd sure be comforting to know you had multiple slugs on tap of one of them bad boys decided you looked delicious.

I have three hunting rifles, my .308 being my favorite, for deer hunting. They also work fine on the hogs around here. I've never used a shotgun for deer hunting since it isn't mandated here. Just seems like using a crescent wrench to drive a nail. I mean, you can do it, but I'd rather have a hammer, a 350 yard hammer. If it were mandated to use slugs, I'd just buy an 85 dollar rifled 12 gauge barrel for my 10 gauge H&R, or maybe, since it's already drilled and tapped, put a LER scope on the smooth bore 10 gauge barrel and get some Federal slugs for it or try to find a mold and mold my own.

I used to own a couple of those; one was a 1400 MKII in 20 gauge, the other a 1400 Ranger in 12. I thought they were pretty nice guns, but I preferred my Remington 1100's, so I sold the Winchesters. I got about $275 each for them, as I recall.

A buddy of mine (rest his soul) absolutely hated Winchester shotguns. Hated them. I'm not sure why, really. But I continue to believe the older ones are pretty good values.

Yeah I use my M1A for hunting deer in counties that allow rifles and a shotgun in my county where rifles are not allowed. When I was growing up though New York state was a shotgun only state.

Avoiding the thread drift in progress already, and to answer your original question, I see 1400's around here for $200-$250. Maybe a little more if you see a seldom used nice 1400 and less if you find it in a 140 model instead. The private label clones of the 1400 like sears or others do not seem to bring nearly as much although they are the same gun. I have seen the Ted Williams clones for as little as $100.

I happen to have a 20 ga Winchester 140 which is an economy version of the 1400. It does feel lighter and just appears a little more breakable than my 1100's. I take good care of my firearms and don't subject them to abuse, so I have not broken anythnig on it. The gun shoots well and is easy on recoil like most gas guns. I have no complaints about the operation of the gun.

I do however prefer my Remington 1100's simply because the gas system is so much easier to disassemble and clean on my 1100's than the 140.

Enjoy your new pair of 1400's They do work well and will provide many hours of pleasure if you take care of them.

I picked up a old beater 1400 at cabelas last year for $130. Brought it home and put some duracoat in gun blue and refinished the wood. Light recoil and very pretty.
