Bill Alexander sent me five samples of the pre-production 6.5 Grendel Wolf 123 Soft-Point ammo being made for Wolf by Prvi Partizan (PPU). I thought you might enjoy an update on the latest developments with this project. I can't wait! :)

First up is the cheapo box the preproduction ammo came in; Wolf will box it in their Gold line.

Here's a photo of Wolf's Gold line packaging shown at SHOT Show 2006.

Back to the preproduction samples; we get a little teaser as she peels off a layer, allowing a little peek. ;)

"Take it off! Take it off!" all the customers cried (that's a line from a polka song, in case you're wondering). And she shows us what she's got! :D

Now she's showing off her little rear end!

OK, OK, enough with the cheesy metaphor! The next two show the headstamp with Prvi Partizan's "PPU" acronym. I believe Bill said he's going to suggest to Wolf that they put their own headstamp on instead. We'll see.

Note also the large primer, compared to Lapua brass with the small primer. Difference in performance between the two will be very minor.

Here are two shots of a line-up of all five 123gr hunting Soft-Points. Going to be wonderful Bambi medicine!

Next is a mix of Wolf's 123 SPs with AA's 123 Lapua Scenar ammunition, for comparison.

And we'll wrap up with two photos of the preproduction ammo loaded into a CProducts 10-round magazine.

Bill has tested and conditionally approved the preproduction samples Wolf sent him, and it's now in PPU's court to make the tweaks according to Bill's specifications.

He said he clocked this ammo at 2580 fps from a 24" barrel, so he's asked for more velocity. He also thought the ammo caused premature copper fouling, so he's asked for a revised powder formulation. These are minor tweaks; Bill thought they were "99%" of the way there.

Unfortunately, as all of us have found out this past summer, the Serbians of PPU operate not on Swiss time, but on what could be called an Eastern European version of "Mexican time." The schedule on this is out of AA's hands, it's out of Wolf's hands, we all wait.

But it will be worth waiting for, because they plan to produce TEN MILLION rounds of the stuff! Yes, that's "ten" with a T and "million" with an M. :D

Good to see. First the Lapua brass, then the 123 SMK gel test, and now the Wolf ammo. It looks like the little Grendel baby has grown up. Congratulations.

Let us know how it shoots. And while your at it, got any old newspapers, phone books? I don't know of any 123 gr SP so I assume it's thier own design?

what do those burp out of?

...an AR15. 123gr vs 62gr in .223. They also have a nasty .50 known as the .50 Beowulf that fits the AR platform.

wow! not that i am a girly-man, but that is one sexy round! looks like if they get that speed up to 3000 fps from a 24 inch bbl, that it would slice through wind like butta!
that being said, though i've never desired to have an ar since I left the Army, this round could change my mind.

If the grendel starts to take off in a serious way, I will probably abandon the 7.62x39. I think it is head and shoulders above every combat capable round that is available today.

Are you on the list to recieve samples from wolf, if there is such a thing, or the person you got them from, are they able to recieve samples. I want to know if wolf making 5.7x28 is a reality, and would like to see the rounds before they come out.

anyone got experience with the reloadability of brass that comes out of PPU?

Slim, sorry but my only connection is regarding the Grendel. Outside of calling and asking Wolf themselves about 5.7x28, I'd say the person who best knows what's going on with them is gun writer David Fortier. The only convenient way I know of contacting him would be to IM him on AR15.com; he goes by the handle of "gunwritr."

Prvi brass? I haven't heard anything bad about it...Mosin shooters seem to be really fond of the '54R. (It helps that the loaded ammunition is Really Freaking Accurate.)

Wolf 6.5 Grendel Finally! Pix!!!

Guys, I just got most of a case of Wolf 6.5 Grendel ammo from Alexander Arms to review. Had a lot of snow this weekend in Minnesota, so I didn't get a chance to shoot it, but I took about a zillion pictures. We've waited a long time for this!!!

This first loading has a 123-grain hunting soft-point. It's not going to outshoot 7.62 NATO M118LR like a 6.5 Grendel 123gr Lapua Scenar can, but my wallet likes it (Cabela's $10.99/20)!

The velocity is still below specification, being 2370 fps from a chrome-lined 16" bbl, but that will have to be incrementally improved in future lots. Bill Alexander posted, "At present, this is running about 50 to 80 fps slower than I would ideally like for the round, but the bullet bearing length will always preclude the velocities matching those of the 123-grain Lapua Scenar and Sierra MatchKing loads."

Some states, like Minnesota, don't allow any .223 round for deer hunting, so this is just what the doctor ordered! What's not to like about big-game hunting with your favorite black rifle in a traditional deer caliber like 6.5mm (with affordable ammo)? Does it get any better than that? :D

Anyway, enjoy the photos, I tried to make them fancy!

First up, is what I see when I get home from work one day! Hoo boy! Christmas 2007 comes early!!!

65G_WolfBoxA.jpg

Remember that movie, A Christmas Story, with the Red Rider BB Gun and "You'll shoot your eye out?" Anyway, the Dad wins a lamp and uncrates it with about as much awe as I opened this box.

A match made in heaven: Cool black rifles and hot new ammo!

I'm surprised Wolf didn't have their supplier, Prvi Partizan of Serbia, headstamp the brass as Wolf.

A 6.5 Grendel-specific magazine from CProducts fits 26 rounds.

How many times have you heard rumors of a Glock AR? Well, this ain't it! (Just checking to see if you were paying attention! ;))

65G_WolfGlock.jpg

Now this is my idea of a police line-up! 6.5 Grendel is perfect for law enforcement that has to deal with four-legged critters, as well as two-legged.

And finally, "Thank yuh, thank yuh, very much. Grendel has left the building!"

Well, this may have sealed it for me. I see my next AR (my 4th) in my future finally. After looking at the available options, 6.5 Gren came out on top as long as I was buying a completely new upper.

Looks like I should go ahead and get that stripped lower and start building while my credit card cools off from the Para FAL I just bought.

Thanks for your work, here.

Will you please post a picture of that round next to a couple of more familiar rifle rounds...For my curiousity. I've never shot a grendel, nor seen the round up close.

wow! not that i am a girly-man, but that is one sexy round!

It is never girly to say a rifle or a round is sexy! :)

One last thing...What is that round good for? What is it comparable to?

Bazooka, ask and ye shall receive! Left to right: 7.62x51 NATO, 7.62x39 Russian, 6.5x55 Swedish, 6.5 Grendel, 5.56x45 NATO.

The 6.5 Grendel was originally designed to maximize the performance of AR15/M16/M4-style rifles, since it fits within their receiver and magazine parameters.

It takes most all standard 6.5mm bullets, so it basically does whatever your standard 6.5x55 Swedish or .260 Remington does, if you understand that it will average about 250 fps slower. So you can look at it as a shorter range version of those cartridges.

The upside is you get much more moderate recoil in a smaller package, so it's easier and more "fun" to shoot, especially if you like to shoot a lot. (Which is why affordable Wolf ammo is exciting! :D)

Please post another review after a range session, and again after you use it on some game. I'd be real curious to see how it performs and if it becomes popular for hunting.

i'd like to know how reloadable that brass is .. it certainly doesnt look like poor-quality stuff.

I haven't reloaded Wolf brass myself, but another guy says their 7.62x54R stuff from the same factory has given him good quality. This brass is annealed, in the last photo you can faintly see the line of discoloration left by the annealing process.
