I was thinking of replacing the magazine tube spring on my Winchester 1300. Nothing wrong with it, it's just getting old. Mine is the "Defender" model whose tube is about 18 inches long. Wolff sells a generic spring, 45 inches long, that they say requires fitting.

Looking for knowledge here... I assume "fitting" means cutting to length. Yes? No? How long?

I have some experience with adding Nordic magazine tube extensions to shotguns . Their springs are 45" and they say to cut them 14"-16" longer then the tube. So trying to put the full 45" in a 18" tube may cause it to bind (reduce capacity) or if it doesn't bind it could be difficult to load. I think in general autoloaders need more magazine spring tension because of the fast cycle time. Pumps? not so much if I'm dong the shooting. Other than length, you may need to bend the end of the spring to fit into the receiver and/or follower. Just make it look like the original and you should be fine. I have a 80's era 1300 defender by the way and it has always worked flawlessly but I too could likely need to freshen the spring.

Thank you Nuke! (8401... is that NPS? I was in 7408.)
Yes, NPS in Orlando. Looks like I'm the "Nub" between the two of us! Hope life has been good to you and yours. It's amazing how we remember the good times and not so much the bad LOL. No regrets here. I was keeping a shipmates motorcycle at my condo in Norfolk while we were deployed, Med Run 88, and he bought me the Winchester 1300 Defender as a gift.
