Woman kills attacker; 8 shootings claim 4 lives

A woman shot an armed man to death Tuesday after he attacked her as she was entering her east-side Detroit home, police said.
The woman, who owns a car dealership, was at the side door of her home in the 15200 block of Troester at 7:45 p.m. when a man ran up behind her brandishing a nickel-plated handgun, Officer Derek Jones said.

"He said, 'I got you,"' Jones said.

She tried to shut her screen door, but he pulled it open and began shoving her into the house, police said. As they struggled, she pulled a handgun from her purse and fired about five shots, Jones said.

The man fell to the ground between the door and the driveway.

Jones said the man was 42 years old and had a criminal record for breaking and entering homes. Police declined to release his name pending notification of his relatives.

Jones said the woman had a permit to carry a concealed weapon.

Detroit police said citywide, at least eight people were shot in less than four hours Tuesday night. At least four of them were killed in the incidents which included a carjacking and an incident police said was drug related.

I find it interesting that our local Detroit Liberal Rag has to include a blurb about other shootings and deaths that had nothing to do with the main story. Why? A happy ending story of a woman successfully defending herself from an attacker isn't good enough? Or maybe it would put concealed carry in too good a light and they certainly don't want that!
:fire:

(hope this isn't a duplicate thread; I searched but did not find)

I half-expected her to be detained for manslaughter.

Yay for negative spin.:cuss: :fire: :banghead:

I love stories with happy endings. She lives, he's rehabiltated and it didn't cost us anything.

That last little note is rather conspicuous. Interestingly, that statistic might have been unchanged had Jones been unarmed, but she was fortunate and savvy enough to produce that handgun death, rather than becoming it.:)

Good for her, but my sympathies go out to her for all the crap that follows. It's better to be alive to feel bad about it all, though, and our sincere thanks for her shot of chlorine for the gene pool.

Ooh. As a journalism grad, I had to answer that.

Subject: Woman kills attacker; 8 shootings claim 4 lives

May I ask what the seven apparently criminal shootings have to do with this apparently justified one?

I would hate to think that this arose from a perverted sense of journalistic "balance."

If you printed a story about a baseball game, would you balance it with a report that seven people were hit by baseball bats?

The parallel is apt: guns are far more often used to prevent crimes than to commit them. We never seem to hear about the self-defense stories, however, unless there is a body. (Hint: in over 98% of cases, simply showing or drawing a gun is enough to deter a criminal.)

Perhaps my confusion is simply a result of poor copy editing?

The story would have made more sense sense with a transition paragraph something like this:

Other criminals were not stopped by law-abiding citizens, and committed eight murders.

I understand the need to provide context, but I think you badly missed the mark in this case.

I look forward to reading your reply.

I sent it to the reporter, the ombudsman, and most of the news/metro editors.

[edit: Whoops. Slipped up on the old geography :( ]

Actually Matt, some of those shootings may have been legal self-defense. The statement doesn't make it clear. The four involved with carjackings may have been the perps being stopped. I dunno. I can hope though.

And the company wonders why i want to pack my pistol when i have to work in detroit and jezz we only carry cash and deal with cash on top of what all is in work van ..

why does it matter that the gun is nickel-plated? Does that make it more or less evil and more or less serious?

JJ, it shows disparity. The poor criminal who attacked this rich carealer only had a nickel 25 Raven. The yuppie female car dealer had presence of mind and a CONCEALED weapon. There is a truly evil lack of parity here. If the criminal had been given a car dealership and a better life, he would have a better house, a better outlook and a better life. He is dead though. He has been reformed for eternity. Sad, the system failed him.:neener:

Good for the woman. One criminal who is now prevented from continuing to be a repeat offender. I hope that the woman makes it through the situation with no criminal or civil lawsuits and no post traumatic stress syndrome and no negative reprecussions.

I'm glad that she took care of business.

It seems that more and more people are taking CCW classes here in Michigan. It's great. :) Always good to hear news about people using their CCW to successfully protect themselves.

The thing that struck me about the story is that the writer made no attempt to differrentiate between victims and perpetrators. Made it sound as if a self-defense was equal to a murder in their eyes. Like it made no difference which of the parties was killed.

I care very much which of the parties was killed. Glad in the lead story that it was the right party.
