I just got home a few minutes ago with my first ever AR platform rifle. The Sportsmens Warehouse near me in Lewisville, Texas is having a going out of business sale. All guns 10% off and all other stuff 30% off.

I had been snooping around checking out a Bushmaster Varminter Rifle for almost a month now. I went there to buy a scope, figuring I would pick up the rifle later, and wound up getting both the rifle and the scope. (I bought the black one, not the camo rifle.)

The rifle features a flat topped receiver with scope bases, 24" heavy fluted chrome moly competition barrel, a 2 stage competition trigger with 1 lb let off, and vented aluminum fore end.

The scope I bought is a Burris XTR 3-12x50mm Tactical with mil-dot reticle (non-illuminated) and 30mm tube, with an olive drab finish. I also bought some medium height Leupold QR quick release rings.

MSRP on the rifle is $1,325.00. Sportsmens Warehouse had it priced at $1,069.95, but on sale, I paid $962.00.

MSRP on the scope was $1,177.00 Sportsmens Warehouse was asking $819.00, and I picked it up for $575.00.

Did I do good?

I can't wait to get the scope mounted and bore sighted so I can play with it!

Sportsmans is closing down a store?????? :( Did BassPro or Fuddbela's run them out of town?

Oh ya, go back there and buy ammo. all of it.

Yeah, I've heard that .223 is getting either hard to get or pricey lately, and for better or for worse, I haven't had to deal with it until now. My next acquisition will be a reloading setup with dies for .308, .44 magnum, .45 ACP, and .223.

I actually bought this rifle because I recently went coyote hunting for the first time and had a ball. I used my friend's AR, which he built but is similar in setup to mine, and I loved it. Had to have one. Also can't wait to jack some coyotes with it, but that's another story.

On that hunt, my friend also bagged a nice doe with his AR. 3 days ago, he nailed a nice little buck with it too. He has a real nice custom built .264 magnum that he uses at longer ranges, but he's taken to carrying his AR more often than not. I also own a nice Remington 700 VSF in .308, which is what I took on that hunting trip, but with scope mounted, ammo and bipod, it's pretty heavy. I can see my new AR replacing my .308 for light handy hunting.

congrats on the ar and a mighty fine one at that. i have killed a lot of coyotes with that same model, they are reliable and accurate as heck. good deal you got too.

Congratulations on your purchase. I've had (have) a few different makers of ARs and I have no doubt that you'll be very happy with your purchase. The model you have is a future purchase I'd love to make. Enjoy.! :D

Nice rifle...It should shoot minute of mouse with good ammo! How's the trigger. Do they put a match trigger in those?

Welcome to the club. I started building my AR around a month ago. I'm using a Stag lower and I ordered a Rock River Arms 24" 1 in 8" varmint upper. RRA takes forever though. I'm still waiting on it to come in. I'm going to be putting a Millett 6-25X56 Buck Gold scope on it. Check out Black Hills blue box ammo for some good, reasonable priced match ammo.

Welcome to the AR club , myself I have an OlyArms K3B-M4-A3 toped with a cheapie Simmons VRC 3.5-10X50 scope or a Aimpoint red dot sight cowitness with my iron sights depending on my mood .

possum, what load have you had the best luck with in your varminter?
it wasn't mine it was my army buddies and we would hunt out in the field behind his house about 3 times a week. i am not entirly sure what the load was, i do know that they were blackhills though. the area was so populated with em that you would ride out there in the truck kill a couple between the 2 of you working with the spoter system, ride back in knock a few out and go to bed. so normally i grabbed the ar while he was driving. he stoped and then bang one down. i wish i did know what load it was, but whatever blackhills load was it worked. i never really got to do many accuracy test and the ones i did were only with a few different loads. sorry i coldn't be of more help.

awesome...you did very good! now get out to the range or field and enjoy your new black rifle! btw...welcome to the club! i'm actually from california, so i'm part of a whole different AR club (10 rd pinned mags suck!). but i only spent just a tad over $600 by building my AR, so i can't complain!

tunis, I used to live in Pasadena, California. Moved here to Texas in April of '06. I love Texas, and there's a couple of things I miss about California, but California's gun laws aren't one of them.

:D

Here's the pics I promised...

Sorry about the quality. I just rushed a few out. Funny thing is that, in the pictures, the scope came out a bronze color because of the flash. It's actually an olive drab green. Go figure. I'm going to try and take it to the range on Wednesday.
