My new job is working at a Self-Storage business. I also get to live in the apartment that's directly above the office.

There have been a few break-in's but nothing serious. What would be your best recommendation overall. Obviously, if I hear something downstairs, I will just call police and baracade myself upstairs with a handgun or shotgun and wait and see if the BG is brave enough to venture upstairs.

Any advice as far as bedside weapon, where to keep various flashlights and/or other weapons.

The fact that the business has been broken into before scares me a little. Tyler

did people break into the main office orthe storage area? is the storage air conditioned? you should just get the owner to put a fence around the place with a gate to get to the storage area. thats how all of the places are down here. at our place the gate has a keypad and we get to choose our own codes when we sign up.

They broke into the main office. The units are NOT air conditioned. There is a gate surrounding the place but criminals just hop the fence or climb over it. There are security cameras all over the place and if anything goes down, I've got a .45 and a Mossberg 500 upstairs if things get sporting. Tyler

hmmm. how did they get in? do you have a security system? if not get one that has magnetic switches inside the doors. motions sensors, and (as opposed to mounted outside but inside the building) film over the windows. it should call the police station if the alarm goes off. having a cellular backup incase the land line is cut would be a good idea. motion sensors would be good too. if theres been more than one break in i think that should warrant putting in a good security system.

how many ways are there to get from the office to the apartment? for everyone door going from the office to your apartment i would install a keyless dead bolt that can only be locked/unlocked from the inside. this would keep them from picking the lock to get to your apartment.

you could also try installing fake motion sensors outside the office with a sign on the gate saying something like 'any nighttime motion inside gate will set off alarm and alert police'.

some bright floodlights with motion sensors outside the office might help too.
