I've been doing some research, trying to come up with more of the facts on guns and crime. One of the sources often quoted is a phone survey done in 1994 (http://www.ncjrs.org/txtfiles/165476.txt).

One of the statistics taken from this phone-based survey, was the total number of guns owned. Obviously, they did a sample group, and then projected the percentages to the whole country, since they did not call all 280,000,000 of us.

My question is; if you were called at home from someone claiming to be from a legitimate organization, and asked you questions like: Do you own a gun? How many guns do you own? Handguns or rifles? For sport or personal defense? Etc.,
Would you take the survey at all? Would you answer completely honestly? Would you be more or less likely to answer if you knew the institution doing the survey was government related?

Poll added thanks to Pax.

If somebody called and started asking questions like that the answer would be simple: That's none of your business!

Your a nice guy.I wouldn't even give them that much.

I don't do unsolicited phone surveys of any type much less one about whether or not I own firearms or even have used one.

And I certainly don't want some stranger who has my phone number to know anything about what things (guns or not) I may or may not have in my house. Even if they used a demon dialer, which I believe are illegal now for telemarketers and I would assume for surveyors, I still won't take part.

With Caller ID, if I don't recognize the number, "Metal Myrtle", my answering machine screeens the calls for me.

Added a poll for you.

MyRoad, you can put up a poll yourself too. It's one of the options when you're starting a thread -- a check box at the bottom of the screen somewhere.

My 2 cents...

If anyone in my family, or any one of my friends wants to reach me, they call my beeper or cell phone. Any calls to my residence are handled by my answering machine because it has gotten to the point where any calls to the home phone are people telling me I've won this...or asking if I'm happy with that...all around dinner time, decompression time, while I'm on the computer, or just outside on the porch. Best thing since sliced bread that machine...

Thanks PAX - I missed that! :)

Other thoughts:

Would you be more likely to take the survey if they called from the NRA?

Would you be more likely to respond to a written (mail back) survey sponsored by a group you trust (NRA, GOA, etc.), than a phone survey?

What I'm trying to get at, is that I wonder if it is possible to get real information, by any of the available methods.

my phone is my servant, not the other way around. My answering machine takes the callers I do not recognize or want to have a conversation with. Polls? I suppose I have talked to three poll takers on the phone in my life and none had to do with firearms. If I could get away with it I probably woulld not even have a phone. They are convienient but on my terms.

Not from me, it isn't. I have occasionally answered gun manufacturers' marketing surveys (usually called "warranty registration") truthfully, but other than that, when it comes to guns, you can count on me to lie or not answer, usually the latter.

ehhh, hard to tell. On the one hand I'm very hesitant to answer any questions about anything from a stranger, especially relating to firearms. I'd have to know who wanted information and for what purpose. What I own I do so legally. OTOH, however, .gov needs to be reminded from time to time.

See my sig.

Do you have any guns?

Do you have any expensive cameras?

How about valuable jewelry?

Any investment-grade coins?

A watchdog or alarm system?

When are you usually away from home?

OF COURSE I'm happy to answer these and other questions when a perfect stranger calls, just because he says he's on the level.

I actually enjoy jacking with the telemarketeers. We usually carry on conversations. I got the idea from listening to a Tom Mabe comedy bit.

No, no and no.

Oh, and if I missed any, the answer to them is NO too. Don't provide info to telemarkets period, certainly not about guns or any other thing I may or may not own.

I think I'd be honestly dishonest.

Do you own a gun? How many guns do you own? Handguns or rifles? For sport or personal defense? Etc.,

The answer to the first is "of course". The answer to the rest is "None of your business." That is, of course, if I didn't just hang up on the telepests first.

I would take the survey. I'm not saying that I'd tell the truth, but I'd take it.
They call all the time, depending on my mood I either hang up on them, or tell them whatever come to mind.

Pick up phone. Listen to question. Put phone back on cradle, go on with life. I don't give out information like that to any yahoo with a phone.

I'm another of the 'if it's unsolicited, I'm Unpolite!'
I have only had a cell phone for the past 6 years, so I don't get anymore sales pitches, polls, etc.

When I do happen to get those type of calls, I simply hang up after a few words.

Now, if the NRA or somebody were to send me a mail in survey, I do those, and I answer honestly. I see no reason to try and Skew the results...

My kids' doctors ask these questions. My answer, when I don't say None of YOUR Business, is to ask "why, who do you want wacked?" Or, "what kind are you looking to buy?"

Boy I have real mixed feelings about this.

On one hand, I'm pretty cautious when it comes to my security, so I would hesitate to answer because I don't want to fill out some thief's "shopping" list.

On the other hand, if us gun owners hide in the shadows then it looks like there's less of us then there are and it empowers the antis.

I guess if I could verify that its a legitimate pollster I'd answer and answer honestly.

For those of you who would take the survey and lie, which way would you lie? Would you say you had a freakin' arsenal when you only have a shotgun and a couple of .22 pistols, or would you say all you have is a shotgun and a couple of .22 pistols when you have a large collection of EBRs?
