API is more common than AP as the Incendiary effects are more usefull than straight AP. Out of the thousands of rounds of 50cal I've fired this year the majority was API, then SLAP then Ball then AP..most of which was WW2 dated along with some of the Ball.
I'd vote no because I doubt they would do such a thing..there's still uses for the cartridge. And it's probably cheaper than Mk211. Then again, who knows.

The U.S. hasn't produced AP since WWII but has bought lots from other countries, mostly Canada from what Keith said. They also got rid of regular incendiary rounds and opted for the M8 API as it could preform both roles at the same time.
The newer ball rounds are also heavier so that their trajectory is closer to that of M8 API.
